Money And Divorce: What Recent Divorce Research Has To Say About Poverty's Effect On Marriage

Money And Divorce: What Recent Divorce Research Has To Say About Poverty's Effect On Marriage ' }); }); }(jQuery)); Posted: Updated: 08/29/2012 1:19 am

Divorce isn't easy for anyone. But for the poorest couples in our nation, money-related issues all too often contribute to divorce -- or prove to be a barrier to obtaining one once they decide to call it quits.

Click through the slideshow below to read about recent research on the intersection of divorce and poverty, then weigh in: which study surprised you most?

  • Divorce Is Too Expensive For The Poorest Americans

More couples are opting for long-term marital separations because they <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/20/divorce-expensive-americans_n_1811821.html" target="_hplink">cannot afford to divorce</a>, according to a study conducted by <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2012-08/asa-msa081412.php" target="_hplink">Ohio State University</a> that was published in August 2012. Researchers surveyed 7,272 people between 1979 and 2008. Most people in the study who separated from a spouse reported getting a divorce within three years of separating. But <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2012-08/asa-msa081412.php" target="_hplink">15 percent of people who separated did not get a divorce within the first 10 years</a> because it was too costly, especially when children were involved.

  • Unemployed Men Are More Likely To Split

In July 2011, researchers at Ohio State University found that <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-06/uocp-hes062011.php" target="_hplink">unemployed men face a greater likelihood that their wives will initiate divorce</a>. They also found that men are more likely to leave their marriages when out of work. A woman's employment status had no effect on whether or not her husband stays or leaves. "There's something still about men's non-employment that flies in the face of what couples think a marriage should be," the study's <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/01/unemployment-divorce-stud_n_888357.html" target="_hplink">lead researcher Liana Sayer told the Huffington Post.</a>

  • Children Of Divorce Are More Likely To Live In Poverty

Children of divorce are more likely to live in poverty and to live with their mothers, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/25/divorce-poverty-children-census_n_936896.html" target="_hplink">according to a Census report</a> on marriage released in August 2011. According to the report, three-quarters of children in divorced families lived with their mother in 2009.<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/25/divorce-poverty-children-census_n_936896.html" target="_hplink"> Twenty-eight percent of children within that group lived below the poverty rate,</a> compared to a 19% poverty rate among other children.

  • Couples Who Receive Government Assistance Are More Prone To Divorce

According to <a href="http://phys.org/news/2011-09-couples-marital-satisfaction-commitment.html" target="_hplink">a study released by the University of Missouri</a> in September 2011, married couples that receive government assistance, such as Medicaid or food stamps, are more prone to divorce. Of the 295 couples surveyed, those earning $20,000 or less and receiving government assistance reported significantly lower rates of marital satisfaction than couples with the same income that received no state support. In <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/14/government-assistance-and_n_959237.html" target="_hplink">an interview with the Huffington Post</a>, researcher Dr. David Schramm sized up the implications of the study. "We have to take a closer look at what the effect of government assistance is, and how it may affect people's attitudes and make them feel inferior," he said. "There may be a stigma associated with receiving welfare assistance, so I think we need to do a better job of looking at what government assistance does to individuals' sense of self and well-being."

  • Lower Income Couples Hold Similar Marriage Values As Higher-Earning Couples

In a <a href="http://www.ncfr.org/sites/default/files/downloads/news/jmf_july_2012_0.pdf" target="_hplink">June 2012 study</a>, researchers at UCLA found that people with lower incomes value marriage just as much as those with higher incomes, though they're more likely to grapple with economic and social issues such as money problems, drinking and drug use. "We found that people with low incomes value marriage as an institution, have similar standards for choosing a marriage partner and experience similar problems with managing their relationships," <a href="http://www.yourtango.com/2012156563/why-do-low-income-marriages-have-lower-success-rates" target="_hplink">researcher Thomas Trail said of the study</a>. "We suggest that initiatives to strengthen marriage among the poor should also take social issues into account, as they can place a tremendous amount of stress on a marriage."

  • Retired Women Are More Likely To Live In Poverty Than Retired Men, Partly Because Of Divorce

According to a July 2012 Government Accountability Office study, women aged 65 and older <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-07-25/women-seen-living-retirement-in-poverty-at-higher-rates-than-men.html" target="_hplink">live in poverty at higher rates than men</a>, despite their involvement in employer-sponsored retirement plans. The study showed that divorce and widowhood had "detrimental effects" for retired women or those reaching the point of retirement, and took more of a toll on women's finances than men's.

  • The States With The Highest Divorce Rates Are Also The Poorest

An <a href="http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/marital_status_living_arrangements/cb11-144.html" target="_hplink">August 2011 Census report</a> on marriage showed that men and women in the South had higher rates of divorce in 2009 than in other regions of the country -- 10.2 divorces per 1,000 men and 11.1 per 1,000 women. Comparatively, the national divorce rate was 9.2 for men and 9.7 for women. The high divorce rates can be partly attributed to <a href="http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/marital_status_living_arrangements/cb11-144.html" target="_hplink">higher marriage rates in the South</a>, Diana Elliott, a family demographer at the Census Bureau said. <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44308315/ns/today-money/t/oklahoma-tops-list-highest-divorce-rates/#.UDaqXRrLyRl" target="_hplink">But according to 24/7 Wall St</a>, its the tough economic climate that drives the divorce rate up. The site reported that states with particularly high divorce rates had below median household income and a high percentage of the population living below the poverty line.

Ariz. pol who faced Israel questions defeats two Jewish Dems in primary

(JTA) -- An Arizona congressional candidate who has faced questions about her Israel stances defeated two Jewish Democrats in a heated primary.

Kyrsten Sinema, a former state legislator, beat out David Schapira, the state Senate's Democratic leader, and Andrei Cherny, a former aide to President Bill Clinton and a past chair of the Arizona Democratic Party, to win Tuesday's Democratic primary in Arizona's 9th Congressional District.

Sinema had faced criticism during the race from Cherny and others on the issue of Israel. Her detractors have cited her leadership roles in anti-war groups that have been harshly critical of Israel.

She has stated that she has "long been a supporter of Israel." Her campaign's policy statement on the issue expresses support for the U.S.-Israel relationship and says that Israel has "the right to defend herself from her neighbors and from terrorist organizations."

Sinema took 42 percent of the vote in the primary to Schapira's 31 percent and Cherny's 27 percent. She will face Republican Vernon Parker in the general election.?

Families of Colo. theater victims question fundraising

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Anguished family members of some of the Colorado theater shooting victims lashed out at a fundraising campaign Tuesday, saying it collected more than $5 million "using pictures and names of our murdered loved ones" but so far has given no more than $5,000 each to families facing bills for medical treatment, travel and other expenses from the attack.

The families also said they've been shut out of decisions on how the money should be spent and that fundraisers were unresponsive to their questions and suggestions.

"When you generate donations for a fund called 'the Aurora Victim Relief Fund' using pictures and names of our murdered loved ones, it would stand to reason the fund is for victims of the Aurora shooting," said Tom Teves, whose son Alex was one of 12 people killed in the July 20 shootings. Another 58 people were wounded, and many of them face long recoveries or permanent disability.

At a sometimes-emotional news conference, Teves read a seven-page statement demanding the fundraisers give the victims and their families a say in how the money is used and questioning why so far only a relatively small portion, $350,000, was being distributed to the victims.

Teves said the statement was on behalf of 11 families. Eighteen other people crowded onto a small platform behind him, some dabbing their eyes with tissues, clasping hands or leaning on each other.

The Community First Foundation, asked by Gov. John Hickenlooper to operate the relief fund, said on its website it has raised just over $5 million for the Aurora Victim Relief Fund. The foundation announced on Aug. 17 that it would give $350,000 to the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance to distribute among the surviving victims and the families of those who died. Earlier, it said another $100,000 was given to 10 nonprofit groups.

Marla J. Williams, president the Community First Foundation, said a gag order imposed by Arapahoe County District Judge William Blair Sylvester made it difficult to find all the victims and their families.

She said a group has been set up to recommend how to spend the donations but no victims' representatives have been chosen yet.

"I don't know who represents the victims. There are a number of people who were involved," she said, adding that the group at Tuesday's news conference did not represent all the victims.

Williams said she worries that Tuesday's statement will give donors second thoughts.

"I'm sad because I think there are people who have been very generous and contributors who might think their money has not been used wisely," she said.

The 37-year-old Community First Foundation supports community programs in the metropolitan Denver area.

Nancy Lewis, executive director of the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance, said the victims and the agencies involved want the same thing: "They want healing for all the crime victims."

She said Sylvester's gag order prevented her from commenting further.

Sylvester issued an order on Aug. 16 barring the organization from releasing names and contact information for the victims. The order does not appear to place any other restrictions on the group.

Teves said the families were humbled by the amount of the donations, and grateful. He said none were speaking out just to get money.

"We have nothing to gain as the families of the murder victims," he said. "We have already lost everything."

He said anyone who was in the theater at the time of the shooting or lived in the same building as the suspect ? who police said had booby-trapped his apartment ? should be eligible to receive help.

Teves insisted the families' purpose wasn't to attack the fundraising groups or the government.

"All we're saying is, 'Listen to us. We have unique knowledge and unique skillsets that we can bring to bear to make this better for all the victims. Why are we shunned to the outside?' That's what this is about."

A meeting is scheduled Friday between victims' families and officials of the fundraising campaign.

Teves challenged Hickenlooper, who attended the slain victims' funerals, to step in and help the families get a say.

"You pledged 12 times that 'We will remember,'" Teves said. "Are you a man who is true to his words, or were they just words?"

Hickenlooper's spokesman, Eric Brown, said the governor understands the families' frustration and is advocating for them to have more say. He said Hickenlooper also wants the fundraisers to improve their communication with the families.

Brown praised the generosity of donors and said the victims would get more money.

"Everyone involved is trying to do the right thing in a very difficult situation," he said.

The suspect in the shootings, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, is charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. He has not entered a plea. The next hearing in the case is Thursday.

Yosemite officials say 1,700 visitors risk disease

(AP Photo/Ben Margot)

(AP) ? The rustic tent cabins of Yosemite National Park ? a favorite among families looking to rough it in one of the nation's most majestic settings ? have become the scene of a public health crisis after two visitors died from a rodent-borne disease following overnight stays.

On Tuesday, park officials sent letters and emails to 1,700 visitors who stayed in some of the dwellings in June, July and August, warning them that they may have been exposed to the disease that also caused two other people to fall ill.

Those four people contracted hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after spending time in one of the 91 "Signature Tent Cabins" at Curry Village around the same time in June. The illness is spread by contact with rodent feces, urine and saliva, or by inhaling exposed airborne particles.

After the first death, the park sanitized the cabins and alerted the public through the media that the cause might have been diseased mice in the park.

However, officials did not know for sure the death was linked to Yosemite or the campsite until the Centers for Disease Control determined over the weekend that a second visitor, a resident of Pennsylvania, also had died.

After every park tragedy, officials stress that Yosemite is a wilderness area and with it come some dangers.

"We're very concerned about visitors and employees," park spokesman Scott Gediman said. "But we feel we are taking proactive steps in both cleaning the affected areas and in public education. But it's absolutely impossible to eliminate all risk."

On Sunday night, health officials with the National Park Service sent out an alert asking public health authorities to be on the watch for more potential rodent-related cases of acute respiratory failure.

Yosemite receives 4 million tourists a year from around the world, and national park officials were trying to determine if the warning should be expanded to include foreign countries.

"We're discussing whether to do that and how to do that," said Dr. David Wong, chief of the epidemiology branch of the National Park Service Office of Public Health.

The disease can incubate for up to six weeks before flu-like symptoms develop. It's fatal in 30 percent of all cases, and there is no specific treatment. It is not spread human-to-human.

Wong said the Yosemite cases are unusual because hantavirus illnesses are most often isolated events.

"We are seeing more than one person who got it in a narrow space and time," he said. "It makes us wonder why, and those are questions we don't have the answers to."

All the victims stayed in the cabins between June 10 and June 20, and all four known cases were contracted by people who stayed within 100 feet of each other but not necessarily in the same cabins.

The National Park Service currently has assigned two epidemiologists to work in the park trapping rodents for testing. Additional studies are being done to determine if the Yosemite rodent population is higher than normal after a record snowpack in 2011 provided ample water for the grass seeds mice favor.

"Rodents and mice are native to the park, but we are looking at the populations and working with our wildlife biologists to determine if the population is too high," Gediman said. "There are rodents here, and we could never trap them all so that's not going to mitigate it."

As the Labor Day weekend approaches, some people have cancelled reservations at Curry Village after hearing about the outbreak, Gediman said.

The camp sits at the base of the 3,000-foot Glacier Point.

After boulders rained down in 2008, the park permanently closed some cabins. The newer, insulated Signature Cabins were built in 2009 to replace them. Investigators are trying to determine why those cabins were involved in the outbreak.

Park concessionaire Delaware North Co., which oversees the cabins, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

Rangers are handing out information brochures at the park entrance warning people to avoid mice in general and mouse droppings in particular.

People with reservations in the affected cabins are not being notified before arrival, but they are being warned during check-in to report any sightings of mouse feces.

"This is a serious public health issue and we want to be transparent, but at the same time we don't want people to alter their plans, because we are taking the necessary precautions," Gediman said.

Since the first illness was reported earlier this month, employees of Delaware North disinfected all 408 canvas-sided and wood-sided cabins in Curry Village. Workers are in the midst of shoring up the cabins in an attempt to keep mice from have easy access.

Epidemiologists say none of the victims had anything in common other than staying in Yosemite cabins.

A 37-year-old man from the San Francisco Bay area was the first person to die. Further details have not been released because of medical privacy laws.

Of the 587 documented U.S. cases since the virus was identified in 1993, about one-third proved fatal.

Deer mice were determined to be the main carriers of the virus, though other rodents can be infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Most of the cases occur in the West, though researchers are not sure why.

This year's deaths mark the first such fatalities of park visitors, although two others were stricken in a more remote area of the park in 2000 and 2010.

There have been at least two other fatal cases in national parks in the past few years, including a deputy superintendent at Glacier National Park who died in 2004, and a tourist at the Grand Canyon who was stricken in 2009.

Wong said health officials never were able to determine whether the victims contracted hantavirus inside the park grounds.

Monitoring the Success of Internet Banner Advertising for Your ...

Get MORE Facebook Fans & Likes

Many people who use Internet banner advertising make a common mistake that costs them a lot of business. They think that their work is done once the banners have been posted on various websites. However, the work is just beginning. This is the point at which you will know whether your campaign is successful or not. If it is not, you will have the opportunity of revising it and making it better for your target audience.

There are several ways to monitor the effectiveness of Internet banner advertising. The first way to find out if your banner is successful or not is by checking on the number of times the ad has been displayed on the website that you have posted them on. Your banner ad cannot reach your target audience without having been displayed on the websites. Websites will usually display ads that are more popular with their target audience more often. You can therefore gauge just how popular your ads are from their display time on websites.

One of the most effective ways of knowing how successful your Internet banner advertising campaign is by checking on the click through rate of the banners. When you choose to use banners for your advertising campaign, your aim is to get as many people to your website as possible. This means that your banners must be able to draw people to your website. They can only do this by making people click on the ads and follow the links. These ads are considered successful if many people click on the advertisements.

You will also need to compare your profits to your cost. You will need to consider the amount of money that you have spent on designing and posting the websites and compare this amount to that which you have received as a result of people taking action. This means keeping track of the sales that you receive from the people who visit your website directly from the Internet banner ads.

Internet banner advertising is a highly effective way of ensuring that you drive targeted traffic to your website. However, without monitoring you will never know just how effective your campaign is. You will never be able to revise your advertising campaign and improve on it. You will therefore not be able to reach your full potential. You will end up spending money and not benefiting from it. Ensure that you monitor your campaigns constantly until you find that successful mix.

Ideas To Help You Achieve Your Home Improvement Goals ...

When it comes to home improvement, have a plan from the start through the finish of your intended improvement. This will ensure that you stay within your budget and that you complete your intended project without the emotional factors being involved. It can be obvious both to a potential buyer and to your pocketbook if a home improvement project is made up as you go.

Adequate lighting in a bathroom has everything to do with making the most out of your space. It is important that the right lighting scheme be used. If you use the right amount of light, it can make your bathroom the relaxing space that it needs to be. Evaluate your bathroom lighting today, and see if there are any improvements you can make.

Having a small kitchen doesn?t have to be all bad. Since you have limited surfaces and space to work with, make sure to purchase a sink with a deep bowl. Then add some elegant high- end faucets to match the rest of your kitchen. You can easily create a feeling of space without having to compromise the rest of your home.

To make the roof on your real estate last as long as possible you should make sure there are power vents installed to draw hot air out of the attic space. This will keep the underside of the roof cooled down so that it does not cook your shingles the way a frying pan cooks and egg.

To make sure that you?re always getting the most out of your air conditioning units, always remember to clean those filters. Especially if you have a large central machine attached to the home, it?s vital that the filter remains clean so that the machine doesn?t have to work too hard and burn itself out prematurely.

To help improve your home, try tiling your patio. You can create an area where you can relax or eat. Tiling the patio is pretty inexpensive, but you do need a professional tiler. Tiles are available in many colors, styles, and materials, so be creative and create your own personal space.

You can make simple art for your wall by purchasing some solid colored picture frames and tearing out pictures from old children?s books. Illustrations from the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz and so on are very popular. They make great old fashioned wall art, and add a touch of personality to your home.

Clean out your home every few months by taking a look around and collecting items that you no longer need. It is a great feeling to update your home decor as well as giving unwanted items to charity. Take those things you no longer need and donate them to a local charity or orphanage. This will de- clutter your home and give you space for new items.

If you are looking for home improvement projects that are guaranteed to raise the value of your home, you can?t go wrong with a bathroom or kitchen remodel. Builders and real estate agents estimate that perfecting these rooms is likely to earn you more than 100 percent back on your investment when you put your home up for sale.

Before you begin painting a room it is important to lay down drop clothes or old sheets on the floor. When painting a room it is very possible to have paint drip or spill on the floor. Regardless of what type of floor you have it can be very difficult to get paint up once it is on a surface.

Consider attending free seminars on home improvement at your local home supply retailer to see how to complete a project safely and correctly. You can even get hands-on practice in areas like tile installation or brick laying. Check out the calendar to see which classes are coming up, or request a class that isn?t on the schedule.

In summary, there are some obvious ideas that have been tested over time, as well as some newer techniques that you may not have considered. Hopefully, as long as you follow what we suggest in this article, you can either get started with your home improvement project or improve on what you have already done.

PUNTO FIJO, Venezuela (AP) ? After nightfall on Friday, as red lights began glowing atop the massive Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, the odor of sulfur made its way through the surrounding neighborhood of working-class homes and small shops.

Francisco Gonzalez, a stocky accountant with dark hair, noticed the smell after 7 p.m. as he climbed the stairs to his second-story apartment across the street from the refinery. He had smelled the fumes from gas leaks many times before, so he didn't think much about it as he shut the door.

Six hours later, disaster struck. A powerful explosion ripped through the neighborhood and engulfed part of the refinery in flames, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 80 in Venezuela's deadliest refinery blast ever.

"The first thing I saw was that the apartment didn't have windows or doors or walls, just a floor and a roof," Gonzalez said. "I don't know how we survived."

In the dark, the 31-year-old man made his way downstairs to the street, where he, his brother and sister-in-law joined terrified neighbors. Some were wounded. Others were shouting.

When Gonzalez looked at the back of his right hand, it was bleeding from gashes.

At about 2 a.m., the halls of the hospital were filling up with wounded people. Doctors and nurses hurried to treat the most seriously hurt, while Gonzalez and others sat on the floor waiting their turn.

Back at the refinery, soldiers, firefighters and state oil company workers were diving into action. Bodies were pulled from the rubble and lifted onto pickup trucks.

Stella Lugo, the governor of Falcon state, went on state television to update the nation, setting the initial toll at seven people dead and 48 injured. The toll steadily rose in the next hours.

When she reached the refinery at dawn, Lugo posted a photo on Twitter showing balls of fire and black smoke billowing.

Other government officials went on television saying the gas leak had led to the blast and that the fire was being brought under control. President Hugo Chavez ordered an investigation and declared three days of mourning in the country.

A total of 209 homes and 11 businesses were damaged in the explosion, and a National Guard post next to the refinery was destroyed, Vice President Elias Jaua said on Saturday night. He said 18 of the victims were National Guard soldiers.

On Saturday night, dozens of people who had fled their homes in the neighborhood of La Pastora returned to streets covered with rubble, twisted scraps of metal and puddles of spilled fuel.

Gabriela Nunez, a housewife, returned to her home to gather belongings, saying she was worried about looters who had stolen goods from nearby stores hours after the explosion.

"That forced us to come back, even though we're afraid, to save what can be saved and secure our houses," Nunez said.

More than a day after the blast, the flames were still raging on Sunday, sending up a thick column of smoke.

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the country has enough fuel in storage, "10 days of inventories," to keep the Venezuelan market fully supplied. He said fires were still burning in two fuel storage tanks but that other "process areas" of the refinery were otherwise unaffected.

Once the flames are completely extinguished, Ramirez said, "we have the ability to restart our refinery in two days."

Restarting will be a challenge for Gonzalez, who picked through what remained of his family's apartment, sweeping away debris with a broom. Broken glass littered the floor along with fragments of the shattered walls.

The shop on the first floor was also destroyed, but Gonzalez and his brother and sister-in-law all survived with only minor injuries.

"I'm happy to be here telling this story," Gonzalez said, his hand covered in a bandage and with stitches on his arms. "Material things, although they cost us a great deal to obtain, aren't worth much when you compare them with life."

Storm Threatening Tampa Puts GOP Climate Position in Spotlight

Politically, Tampa, Fla., was a perfect choice to host the Republican National Convention -- the city sits at the heart of a swing district in a crucial 2012 battleground state. Practically, it may have been less so -- as organizers worry that it remains right in the path of Hurricane Isaac.?

It wasn?t hard to predict this problem. Florida is one of the most hurricane-prone states in the nation. Late August is the peak of the hurricane season. In fact, Gulf Coast hurricanes disrupted both of the last two Republican National Conventions. In Minneapolis in?2008, the threat of destruction from Hurricane Gustav prompted GOP nominee Sen. John McCain?s campaign to consider cancelling some or all of the event. During the 2004 GOP convention in New York City, Florida was hit by Hurricane Charley, and Gov. Jeb Bush was forced to stay home to manage the disaster instead of attending the nomination of his brother.

"In terms of the overall statistical risk of encountering a dangerous hurricane, the risks are well documented in Florida,? said?Kerry Emanuel, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor of atmospheric science, who has authored one of many scientific?reports on the increasing frequency of high-intensity hurricanes due to climate change.??

Emanuel added, ?In the longterm sense, we?re very worried about Tampa.? That?s because, he said, Tampa has long, shallow coastal shelf, which could make it more vulnerable to destruction from a surge of water due to an intense hurricane -- the type that his studies predict are likely to increase in the future.

While scientists caution that no single weather event can be directly attributed to climate change, major weather events associated with climate change, such as this summer?s drought, and the 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita, tend to fire up the incendiary debate about climate change -- which could happen once again if a massive political convention gets hit by a major storm.

The Republican party has shifted hard to the right on climate change since the last presidential election -- in 2008, McCain campaigned on the promise of tackling climate change, and embraced the cap-and-trade policy that has since become politically toxic within his own party. Now, denying the scientific findings linking oil and coal pollution to climate change has become mainstream in the GOP, and nominee Mitt Romney has publicly walked back his formerly expressed views that humans contribute to global warming. Vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan has also questioned the science of climate change, and environmentalists have criticized the party for embracing an energy platform aimed at aggressively expanding oil production while slashing programs for renewable energy.??

Some Republicans say they?re not worried that a hurricane at their party will ignite criticism on their party?s climate change positions.

?The only thing harder than predicting election results is predicting the hurricane season. There is absolutely no way of knowing what nature will send your way,? said Ana Navarro, a Florida political strategist.?

But stronger hurricanes are among the most serious consequences of climate change induced by the burning of fossil fuels that the Romney campaign is pushing, and Florida and the Gulf Coast are likely to experience the worst impacts, according to a 2012?report?by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and 2009?report, ?Global Climate Change Impacts in the U.S.,? authored by 13 federal agencies including NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.???

That report concludes that in the U.S. southeast, ?compared to the present coastal situation, for which vulnerability is quite high, an increase in hurricane intensity will further affect low-lying coastal ecosystems and coals communities along the Gulf and South Atlantic coastal margin. An increase in intensity is very likely to increase inland and coastal flooding, coastal ? Major hurricanes also? pose a severe risk to people, personal property, and public infrastructure in the southeast, and this risk is? likely to be exacerbated.?

Fossil fuel interest groups, including the oil and coal industries, are playing a big role at the Tampa convention. The American Petroleum Institute, the lobbying arm of the oil industry, is hosting several major parties and events in Tampa. API president Jack Gerard, a close friend of Romney?s, acknowledged that a hurricane might well prompt critics to point fingers at his group. He said they?ll try to send a message that as an industry, they?re actually helping solve the climate problem.??

?We walk the walk,? he said. ?The oil and gas industry since 2001 has invested $71 billion in zero-and low-carbon emitting technologies -- this industry does more than the government,? he said.

Iran hails Non-Aligned summit as diplomatic coup against West

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran hopes to earn diplomatic kudos over the coming week as it hosts a summit of 120 developing nations, but any jubilation could turn sour over starkly different views on the bloody conflict in Syria.

The Islamic Republic's three-year tenure as head of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which starts on Sunday, is a chance for Tehran to elevate its international standing as the United States seeks to cripple its economy and isolate it diplomatically over its disputed nuclear program.

Although many analysts say the movement, set up in 1961 to counter big power domination of international relations, has waned since the end of the Cold War, the diplomatic spotlight will give Tehran an opportunity to show Washington has failed to cut it off from the rest of the world.

"Hosting the conference is Iran's way of breaking the diplomatic embargo," said Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

Around 35 heads of state or government are attending from the movement's wide membership that stretches from developing giants such as India to tiny Caribbean islands.

The guest list includes new Egyptian President Mohammad Mursi - the first Egyptian leader to visit Iran since its Islamic revolution in 1979.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will also attend, resisting diplomatic pressure to boycott the event After President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeated his view that Israel is a "cancerous tumor" that had no place in the Middle East.

Both are expected to attend an address by Iran's most powerful figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"The Iranians love a stage. If they handle it diplomatically they will at least bask in the reflected glory," said Ali Ansari of St Andrews University in Scotland.

As host, Iran will prepare the first draft of the meeting's final declaration, likely to include statements affirming its right to peaceful nuclear technology, condemnation of Israeli military threats against it and censure of Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands.

"Hosting and chairing NAM has a lot of benefits. It's the basis for continuing political influence over a significant group of developing nations for three years," said Professor Peter Willetts of City University. "The host always has key influence over the starting point for discussions."

Where that may differ is on the issue of Syria, Iran's chief ally in the region in its "axis of resistance" against Israel, Sunni Arab states and their Western backers.

    DISSENT ON SYRIA

Willetts' analysis of a U.N. General Assembly vote on August 3 condemning the Syrian government's use of force against its own people showed that 70 of the 120 NAM members voted in favor and only 8 voted with Syria, Iran, China and Russia.

"Given NAM members have a long history of opposing interference the internal affairs of developing countries, this is an extraordinary demonstration of the revulsion felt by the majority towards the violence in Syria," he said.

"Iran will be very embarrassed in its domestic politics if they have to host an event that ends up condemning the Syrian government."

Another source of embarrassment could spring from Ahmadinejad who has a record of using international events to make firebrand, anti-Israeli speeches.

"The supreme leader (Khamenei) should hope that Ahmadinejad doesn't sink Iran's diplomatic ship with his loose talk at this rare and important opportunity," said Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian-born analyst based in Israel.

Western governments do not expect Iran's turn in the diplomatic limelight to bring it too many rewards. "The risk is if we get to excited about the event and give more kudos to it than it really deserves," a Western diplomat told Reuters.

Last week, the U.S. State Department appeared to play up the influence of the summit, saying Iran was not "deserving" of the role as host and would try to "manipulate participants".

The diplomat said any such move may backfire on Iran.

"It may succumb to the temptation to use the movement for its own purposes and cause massive dysfunctionalism in the organization. Moderate members won't want NAM to be hijacked," he said.

    "DAM AGAINST THE US"

There is little doubt that Iran wants to reconstruct NAM into a more muscular political tool. Iranian media have been full of announcements from officials saying Tehran would breathe new life into it to challenge "Western domination".

Iran's tenure as chairman of the movement has been described locally as "a show of power against global arrogance" and a "strong dam against the U.S.".

Iran also aims to promote culture and tourism to the more than 7,000 delegates. According to one official, Tehran's businesses will cash in on $50 million in extra business.

Authorities have announced a week's holiday to minimize Tehran's choking traffic and have spruced up areas where events will be held.

But some Iranians are not impressed. "Some of us are concerned about the expense of the summit at a time of severe recession in Iran," said an unemployed journalist who declined to be named.

An Iranian blogger told Reuters he had noticed a bigger police presence at night. "We'll spend most of the time with friends partying because we're sure no police will bother raiding parties," he said. "They'll be occupied enough with security at the summit."

Why did Japanese scientists make apes inhale helium?

Gibbons, a family of small ape native to Asia, are able to adjust their vocal anatomy just like the world's best sopranos, a new study involving a captive gibbon and helium-enriched air.

    By Ben Hirschler,?Reuters / August 23, 2012

A baby gibbon sits on a swing in its enclosure in Vienna's Schoenbrunn zoo in 2010.

Gibbons are jungle divas. The small apes use the same technique to project their songs through the forests of southeast Asia as top sopranos singing at the New York Metropolitan Opera or La Scala in Milan.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

That was the conclusion of research by Japanese scientists who tested the effect of helium gas on gibbon calls to see how their singing changed when their voices sounded abnormally high-pitched.

Just like professional singers, the experiment found the animals were able to amplify the higher sounds by adjusting the shape of their vocal tract, including the mouth and tongue.

It is a skill only mastered by a few humans, yet gibbons are able to do it with minimal effort, according to Takeshi Nishimura from the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University.

Singing is particularly important to gibbons, which use loud calls and songs to communicate across the dense jungle. Their exchanges, described by primatologists as "duets", can carry as far as two kilometers (just over one mile).

"Our data indicate that acoustic and physiological mechanisms used in gibbon singing are analogous to human soprano singing, a professional operatic technique," Nishimura and colleagues wrote in a study in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology on Thursday.

Professional sopranos' ability to fine-tune their vocal tract resonances allows them to maintain their volume when they hit the high notes.

The fact that gibbons can do the same thing suggests the complexity of human speech may not have needed specific modifications in our vocal anatomy.

Making gibbons sing on helium may sound eccentric but Nishimura said it was a logical way to test how the animals controlled vocalization when the resonance frequencies in the vocal tract were shifted upwards.

"Using the helium environment, we can easily see how the resonance works and how the gibbon makes its loud pure-tone calls," he said in an interview.

His team used a captive white-handed gibbon to record 20 calls in normal air and 37 calls in a helium-enriched atmosphere to show how the animals could consciously manipulate their vocal cords and tract.

They worked out the gibbon's vocal tract had been adjusted by analyzing the sounds it produced.

Helium causes its distinctive effect because sound travels much faster through the gas than through air.

New Careers Begin for People That Pass CNA Classes and the State

Those who want to enter the growing healthcare field should begin by taking CNA classes. Upon the finishing of these classes, CNA hopefuls can take their nation's licensing examination. People who pass this examination can find work as a CNA, or Certified Nursing Aid.

Jobs in most sectors are uncommon, but the healthcare industry offers career opportunities which are fast to obtain. Healthcare employees also enjoy job security not afforded to many other employed folks in the United States.

The number of ways in which one can obtain a CNA Education are higher than ever thanks to the Internet. There are numerous Web-based CNA classes, permitting a rocketing quantity of students to take advantage of this schedule-friendly learning avenue. Another benefit to internet courses is that they generally cost less money than those offered at hospitals, technical colleges and community colleges.

A lot of CNA programs require at least 75 hours in the lecture room and 16 hours of clinicals. Proactive instruction is completed under a supervising physician, Approved Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

Now that roles are hard to get and keep, it is a relief to know amazing opportunities that need short coaching stints abound in the healthcare industry. After students pass the state examination and obtain ratification, they can work as a CNA, earning a yearly wage of $21,000 to $34,000. The precise wage will rely upon the CNA?s level of experience, geographical location and facility of employment.

CNA Classes are Nursing Career Steppingstones

Most individuals who continue their studies to become RNs or higher-level nurses commenced as CNAs. No matter the career level, these healthcare employees have a driven purpose of providing compassionate patient care.

Often , CNAs have a large amount of one to one patient care responsibilities whether they work at an infirmary or a nursing home. Since CNAs have more direct patient contact than doctors and RNs, CNAs must asses a patient?s health daily, and they are required to inform their direct supervisor of any changes in the patient?s behavior or health.

CNAs must perform an abundance of physical tasks such as bathing patients, making beds, feeding patients and aiding with patient mobility issues.

There is an unmistakable appeal to earning a liveable wage by performing required, occasionally simple, tasks, particularly when CNA training times are short.

The rules set for CNAs will alter according to the express state of employment. But most state laws are similar, so that the process to transfer one?s CNA certification to another state is mostly simple.

Without regard for the state or learning institution where a possible Certificated Nursing Assistant student takes the concomitant course-work, the primary point of classwork and clinicals is to ready the coed for the licensing examination in their state. After the coed passes recounted examination, they can seek work as a CNA in the state of licensure.

Several Payment Options for CNA Classes

Those that talk to college advisors or search the Net to find no-cost CNA classes can dictate precisely what quantity of money the pay toward CNA training regardless if the coursework is finished in a standard setting or thru a remote learning program.

While community varsities infrequently charge an upwards of $1,000 for short-lasting CNA classes, these institutions often provide financial help, like scholarships, to decrease the costs of receiving Certificated Nursing Assistant training.

Even though Certificated Nursing Assistant program qualification requirements vary by state, and occasionally by city, the majority of the rules stay the same.

For example, hopeful CNA students in the city of Manhattan must meet the following program needs. Students:

    - Be at least 18-years-old, ? Not possess a criminal history that includes felonies, ? Must have the power to life at least 40 pounds, ? Need to own a British reading and writing level comparing to 6th grade, ? Should be authorized to work in the United States, ? Must show compassion toward patients.

The aforementioned qualifications are general for potential Certificated Nursing Assistant students from any state in the United States. People who meet these needs can take step 1 toward a rewarding healthcare career by registering for CNA classes.

Glenda write at length about CNA Training Programs on subjects like CNA Classes and CNA Training On the internet.
