Happy Active Aging Week! This week 9/23-9/29 is the International Council on Active Aging?s, active aging week! This is an annual health promotion event created and planned by the ICAA, where many older adults will find a number of interesting things to do and learn. Seniors centers and retirement communities, parks and health clubs, nature preserves and dance halls, are providing and have provided a number of opportunities to help older adults to lead an active life. ?Some common activities done during this week are listed below as well as on the ICAA?s website.

Summit Place is celebrating Active Aging week for the 4^th?year by offering a full schedule of presentations that emphasize fun and education.? Activities for the week include discussions on the Top 10 Heart Healthy Foods, yoga and balance classes in the pool, dance class, a bonfire with sing-a-long, smart phone and tablet classes with Senior TechRally, Heimlich Maneuver review, live Wabasha Eagle presentation, art class and skin care with Clinique, cooking classes, how to manage hip and back pain (in the pool with Cathy Hills), chiropractic care and much more.

We are excited Summit Place is using their HydroWorx 2000 Series pool as a part of their active aging week activities!

Additionally, Virginia Bishop?s story is a prime example of how the HydroWorx pool has changed her life and helped her become more active.?From the case study video on our website, Director of Wellness, Nick Drey, of Walnut Ridge in Clive, IA discusses Virginia?s use of the pool and the impact it has made on her health. At the time of the study Virginia was 67 years old, diagnosed with MS and Parkinson?s disease and completely wheel chair bound. She was at a different facility prior to coming to Walnut Ridge, and she was told that her only option was to be in a nursing home. Upon hearing that and doing some more research with her doctors, she?ended?up at the Walnut Ridge campus where she begun to work with Nick in the HydroWorx 1200 series therapy pool. At the time of the video, he had been working with her for 2-3 months and noticed significant improvements. ?At the starting point Virginia could not bear any of her own weight and the MS affected her left side, therefore affecting her posture. Since beginning aquatic therapy in the pool, her lower extremities have gotten stronger,?flexibility?improved, and her core strength has increased greatly. Increasing her core strength has then improved her posture and stamina, therefore enabling her to perform daily tasks as well as play the piano again! Latest Research Findings at Cancun's 2nd International Expo ...

The second International Expo & Business LGBT event took place September 6-9, 2012 in Cancun.

Marketing and research consulting firm Out Now Global released the latest findings from the world's largest research study on Mexico?s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

In his keynote address during the Cancun expo, Out Now CEO Ian Johnson released the results, noting tourism as one of the key markets. The LGBT2020 study showed that between 2012 and 2013, Mexico?s LGBT population is expected to account for a total of $9.2 billion dollars spent on global travel, accommodations and holiday spending each year. In 2011, this figure was $7.8 billion dollars. The USA has dropped two rankings as a desired LGBT tourism destination in 2013.

"The 'Out Now Global LGBT2020 Study? is the world's most comprehensive research project ever into the lives of LGBT people," said Johnson. "Out Now believes that it is the Latin American region where the growth of LGBT marketing will expand fastest in the next five years.?

In 2012, the LGBT2020 Study reached 24 countries in 12 languages. In 2013, the Study is slated to expand to 30 countries worldwide. Other key travel-related findings from the LGBT study for Mexico in 2012 included the following:

Booking hotels: The number one booking channel for LGBT travel purchases of hotel accommodation is direct with the hotel's own website (41%), followed by 29% who book direct with the hotel by phone, 14% who book online using a mainstream travel agent or tour operator and 8% who use a mainstream travel agent retail store.

??????????? Booking airlines: 62% of all LGBT purchases of airline tickets are made by consumers booking direct on the airline's own website, 15% book with a mainstream travel agent or tour operator's website and 12% book by telephone direct with the airline.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling the U.N. General Assembly that he wants to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy but that the time to do that is not unlimited.

Obama says that time after time, Iran has failed to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful and has failed to meet its obligations to the United Nations. He also says the Iranian government has been propping up the dictatorship in Syria and supporting terrorist groups abroad.

The president says, quote, "the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

This is Obama's final international address before the November elections.

Large bacterial population colonized land 2.75 billion years ago

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? There is evidence that some microbial life had migrated from Earth's oceans to land by 2.75 billion years ago, though many scientists believe such land-based life was limited because the ozone layer that shields against ultraviolet radiation did not form until hundreds of millions years later.

But new research from the University of Washington suggests that early microbes might have been widespread on land, producing oxygen and weathering pyrite, an iron sulfide mineral, which released sulfur and molybdenum into the oceans.

"This shows that life didn't just exist in a few little places on land. It was important on a global scale because it was enhancing the flow of sulfate from land into the ocean," said Eva St?eken, a UW doctoral student in Earth and space sciences.

In turn, the influx of sulfur probably enhanced the spread of life in the oceans, said St?eken, who is the lead author of a paper presenting the research published Sunday (Sept. 23) in Nature Geoscience. The work also will be part of her doctoral dissertation.

Sulfur could have been released into sea water by other processes, including volcanic activity. But evidence that molybdenum was being released at the same time suggests that both substances were being liberated as bacteria slowly disintegrated continental rocks, she said.

If that is the case, it likely means the land-based microbes were producing oxygen well in advance of what geologists refer to as the "Great Oxidation Event" about 2.4 billion years ago that initiated the oxygen-rich atmosphere that fostered life as we know it.

In fact, the added sulfur might have allowed marine microbes to consume methane, which could have set the stage for atmospheric oxygenation. Before that occurred, it is likely large amounts of oxygen were destroyed by reacting with methane that rose from the ocean into the air.

"It supports the theory that oxygen was being produced for several hundred million years before the Great Oxidation Event. It just took time for it to reach higher concentrations in the atmosphere," St?eken said.

The research examined data on sulfur levels in 1,194 samples from marine sediment formations dating from before the Cambrian period began about 542 million years ago. The processes by which sulfur can be added or removed are understood well enough to detect biological contributions, the researchers said.

The data came from numerous research projects during the last several decades, but in most cases those observations were just a small part of much larger studies. In an effort to provide consistent interpretation, St?eken combed the research record for data that came from similar types of sedimentary rock and similar environments.

"The data has been out there for a long time, but people have ignored it because it is hard to interpret when it is not part of a large database," she said.

Co-authors are David Catling and Roger Buick, UW professors of Earth and space sciences. The work was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Virtual Planet Laboratory in the UW Department of Astronomy.

New chemistry technique reproduces nature's elusive complexity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have shown how to synthesize in the laboratory an important set of natural compounds known as terpenes. The largest class of chemicals made by living organisms, terpenes are made within cells by some of the most complex chemical reactions found in biology.

The new technique, described in an advance online edition of the journal Nature Chemistry on Sept. 23, 2012, mimics a crucial but obscure biochemical phenomenon that allows cells to make terpenes. The discovery may one day result in cheaper, fully synthetic versions of the cancer drug Taxol, the antimalarial compound artemisinin and hundreds of other useful terpene products.

"It's exciting for us because we're now making molecules that have never been made in the laboratory before, and we've done this by first observing what nature does," said the senior investigator for the study Ryan A. Shenvi, a chemist at Scripps Research.

Powerful Biological Functions

Terpenes take their name from one of their best-known representatives, the paint thinner turpentine -- a derivative of pine sap. Many terpenes, like those in turpentine, are small, plant-made molecules that turn into vapor at relatively low temperatures and waft easily through the air. These often serve as important chemical signals for plants, and are used by humans in fragrances and flavorings.

Some terpenes are more complex, and are synthesized by plants and other organisms as powerful cellular defense mechanisms. "Having such strong biological functions can make them very useful in medicine," said Shenvi. Paclitaxel (Taxol), a widely used cancer drug, is a terpene derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. Artemisinin, the basis for a major class of antimalarial therapy, is a terpene made by the sweet wormwood herb. But the terpene family is highly diverse and also includes vitamin A, menthol, cholesterol and steroids.

Many terpenes, including Taxol and artemisinin, are made naturally in cells by processes that are so complicated, and so hard to understand, that chemists haven't been able to recreate them fully using organic chemistry techniques. The commercial production of these two medicines still depends on the relatively expensive harvesting of starting compounds from plants.

Taking Up the Challenge

In the new study, Shenvi and a postdoctoral researcher in his laboratory, Sergey V. Pronin, set out to recreate one of the two major terpene synthesis processes in nature. Known as tail-to-head polycyclization, this process is used by cells to make numerous complex terpenes. (The other major terpene synthesis process, head-to-tail polycyclization, is already partially reproducible with organic chemistry, and results in terpenes that include steroids.)

The tail-to-head polycyclization process begins with a relatively simple chain of carbon atoms, each of which is decorated with other, mostly hydrogen atoms. The goal of the process is to bend this linear hydrocarbon structure in a way that yields one ringlike structure, then another, and so on in a "polycyclic" chain.

A crucial feature of this process is the effective displacement of positive charge from one carbon atom on the structure to another, in just the right sequence. What makes this feat so challenging for chemists to reproduce, and even to analyze, is that this positively charged state in principle can slide along numerous alternative pathways on the emerging structure. Moreover, because it powerfully attracts negatively charged ions, this carbon-based positive charge, which chemists refer to as a carbocation ["carbo-cat-eye-on"], is inclined to snuff itself out almost immediately.

"Carbocations are notoriously tricky to include in synthetic procedures in the laboratory, because their lifetimes are so short," said Shenvi. "And yet nature has evolved tools to handle them."

Chief among these tools are cyclase enzymes, which hold terpene molecules that are under construction and use their own charged structures to protect carbocations from being quenched -- at least long enough to let them do their work. Chemists who have sought to synthesize terpenes in the laboratory generally have done so without trying to mimic these enzymes' charge sequestration mechanism.

"The natural synthetic pathways were assumed to be much too difficult and maybe impossible," Shenvi said. "But we decided that we would have to recreate it somehow if we wanted to develop a broadly useful technique for making this group of terpenes."

Following Nature's Lead

Pronin and Shenvi eventually found that a type of vinyl epoxide seems to serve as a partial substitute for cyclase enzymes. "We think that it effectively holds the negatively charged counteranion, which would otherwise follow and quench the carbocation before the reaction is complete," said Pronin.

As a demonstration of the power of their new technique, the chemists used it to make two different types of terpene, known as funebrene and cumacrene, starting from relatively simple organic chemistry ingredients. These terpene compounds had never before been fully synthesized outside of living cells.

Shenvi emphasizes that this report represents merely an initial, foundational description of this new strategy, and that technical obstacles still prevent its widespread use. "But once we can get past these obstacles, we should be able to use this new approach to fully synthesize many other valuable compounds," he said. "Basically the entire realm of terpenes will be reproducible with organic chemistry."

Funding for the study, "Synthesis of highly strained terpenes by non-stop tail-to-head polycyclization," was provided by a start-up grant from the Scripps Research Institute and a grant from Eli Lilly & Co.

Losers of their last four games, the Mariners will face a gauntlet of tough Texas pitchers this weekend to conclude the season's penultimate home stand against the team with the American League's best record. Converted reliever Martin Perez, who goes Friday, threw 4.1 no-hit innings of relief against Seattle last week. Matt Harrison is 4-0 against Seattle this season and Ryan Dempster has won six of his last eight decisions.

The Mariners will counter Friday with Hisashi Iwakuma, who has dropped his past two decisions, but has developed into an effective starter. He catches one break because Texas strongman Josh Hamilton was sent home from Anaheim Thursday to deal with a sinus infection. A closer look:MARINERS: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (6-5, 3.39 ERA, 1.29 WHIP)

The 31-year-old Iwakuma, in his first major league season, makes his 14th start and third against the Rangers (he made a relief appearance May 30). Iwakuma, who started the season as a reliever and then stretched out to become a starter during a minor league assignment, lost to the Rangers 4-0 July 15 and 9-3 Sept. 14 He has lost his last two decisions after winning four consecutive decisions.

A native of Tokyo, the 6-3, 190-pound Iwakuma signed with the Mariners as a free agent Jan. 5, following an 11-year career in his native country. Iwakuma pitched for Osaka Kintetsu from 2001-04, and for Rakuten from 2005-11. His record was 107-69, 3.25 ERA.

In 2004, Iwakuma started out 12-0 en route to a 15-2 record and 3.45 ERA. He had his only 20-win season in 2008 when he went 21-4, 1.87 ERA in 28 starts. Iwakuma won Japan?s equivalent of the Cy Young award.

In 2008, Iwakuma was named the Pacific League Most Valuable Player and also named an NPB All-Star.

Iwakuma played in the 2004 Olympics and in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, where he won a gold medal.

Iwakuma has pitched at least 5.0 innings in all nine of his starts and has worked at least 7.0 in two of his past three. He also has two saves, May 30 at Texas and June 2 at Chicago.

Iwakuma continues to allow plenty of baserunners, but is proving to be a master at getting out of jams. The Mariners have won four of the right-hander?s past seven starts.

Perez won his only game as a starter June 30, beating Oakland 7-2.A native of Portuguesa, Venezuela, the 6-0, 180-pound Perez signed with the Rangers as an amateur free agent in 2007. He pitched in Texas' minor league system until June 27, 2012, when he made his major league debut against the Detroit Tigers. Perez worked 0.2 innings of relief and did not factor in the decision.Before his call-up to the Rangers in late June, Perez pitched for AAA Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League. He compiled a 7-6 record in 22 games, 21 starts. Since joining the Rangers, Perez has appeared in nine games, three as a starter and six as a reliever, working a total of 29.1 innings.Perez has pitched five innings or more four times, his longest outing coming July 6 when he went 6.0 innings in what turned out to be a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

• April 24: Catcher Miguel Olivo matched the franchise record when he was charged with three passed balls in a 7-4 win at Detroit. Jerry Narron let three balls get by him Oct. 4, 1980, and Jeff Clement did likewise Aug. 10, 2008 (Clement was catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey).
• April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
• April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.
• May 2: Ichiro set a club record for most putouts by a right fielder in a nine-inning game, registering 10 in a 5-4 loss at Tampa.
• May 3: The Mariners featured a lineup at Tampa Bay that included seven left- handed hitters and two switch-hitters. It marked only the third time in club history that the Mariners used an all left-sided lineup. Others: Aug. 13, 1983 at California and Aug. 9, 1983 at Oakland.
• May 5: Combined one-hitter by Felix Hernandez and Steve Delabar vs. Minnesota was the 13th in Mariners history. Ten have been thrown by one pitcher, three combined. • May 9: When John Jaso batted leadoff against Detroit, it marked the first time since 1978 that a catcher had hit first for the Marines (Bob Stinson). Oddly, lefty Jaso led off against Tiger lefty Drew Smyly.
• May 8: Kevin Millwood's 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood's gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood's complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
• May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
• May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
• June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
• June 18: Aaron Hill of Arizona hit for the cycle in the Diamondbacks' 7-1 win over the Mariners. Hill singled in the first (Hector Noesi), tripled in the third (Noesi), doubled in the fifth (Noesi) and homered in the seventh (Shawn Kelley).
• June 19: Ichiro reached 2,500 hits (first-inning single) in the fourth-fewest games in major league history during a 12-9 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. His 2,500th hit came in his 1,817th game. Al Simmons had 2,500 hits in 1,784 games, Ty Cobb in 1,790 and George Sisler in 1,808 . . . When Kyle Seager and Brendan Ryan both hit three-run homers in the fifth inning, it marked the first time since July 30, 2003 vs. Detroit that the Mariners had a pair of three-run bombs in the same inning. In that July 30, 2003 game, John Olerud hit a three-run homer and Randy Winn a grand slam in the first inning.
• July 1: One-time Mariner farmhand David Ortiz of the Red Sox hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning, giving Boston a 2-1 win over the Mariners.
• July 3: In Seattle's 6-3 win over Baltimore at Safeco Field, The Mariners had three Japanese players in the starting lineup - Ichiro Suzuki, Munenori Kawasaki and Hisashi Iwakuma - for the first time in major league history.
• July 23: Mariners traded Ichiro, face of the franchise for 11 1/2 years, to the Yankees for two prospects and cash considerations. Ichiro made his debut against Seattle with the Yankees at Safeco field and went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.
• Aug. 15: Felix Hernandez threw the 23rd perfect game in major league history, defeating Tampa Bay 1-0 at Safeco Field. Hernandez recorded 12 strikeouts in throwing the third no-hitter in franchise history . . . Mariners became the first team in MLB history to throw a perfect game and have one thrown against them. It was also the first time two have been thrown in the same stadium in one season . . . Of the 22 previous perfect games, six were by 1-0 scores, the last by Roy Halladay May 29, 2010 at Florida. It was also the fourth 1-0 win for the Mariners this season . . .Hernandez became the second Latin American pitcher to do the deed (Nicaragua's Dennis Martinez for Montreal July 28, 1991, against the Dodgers).
• Sept. 18: Seattle's 18-inning, 4-2 loss to Baltimore at Safeco Field marked the second-longest home game in Mariners history and the longest -- 5:44 -- in terms of time since a 5:47 marathon at Texas in June 2004. The only longer game in terms of innings was a 19-inning affair against the Boston Red Sox Aug. 1, 2000.
