NEW YORK --?An unknown illness, suspected of being a norovirus, has sickened 194 passengers and 11 crew members aboard the luxury cruise ship Queen Mary 2, causing vomiting and diarrhea, federal health officials said on Friday.
Earlier in the week, 189 passengers and 31 crew members on the Emerald Princess came down with the same symptoms.
The symptoms are those of norovirus, a contagious microorganism that can be acquired from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Norovirus causes an inflammation of the stomach or intestines called acute gastroenteritis, producing stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea, and is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the United States.
Each year, norovirus causes some 21 million illnesses, of which 70,000 require hospitalization. It kills about 800 people a year, the CDC says.
The Queen Mary 2, with 2,613 passengers and 1,255 crew members, is now docked in Saint Lucia in the Caribbean, according to ship owner Cunard Line, which is owned by Carnival Corp. The cruise left Brooklyn, New York, last Saturday and is due to return there next Thursday.
The CDC learned of the illnesses on the QM2 on Christmas Day on Tuesday, and of those on the Emerald Princess last Saturday. Vessels are required to notify the agency when 2 percent of those on board develop a gastrointestinal illness.
Although the microbial culprit remains unclear In both cases, another reason to suspect norovirus is that the pathogen "has affected a number of schools, hospitals, nursing homes and children's day care centers this winter" in the United Kingdom, Cunard said in a statement.
The UK's Health Protection Agency reports that norovirus activity in the country is 83 per cent higher than last year.
The QM2 sails regularly scheduled crossings between New York and Southampton, England, between April and late November, Cunard spokeswoman Jackie Chase said in an email. "In addition, many of our guests come from the UK."
The QM2's captain is advising passengers with gastrointestinal symptoms to report to the medical center, Chase said. Those sickened are asked to "isolate themselves in their cabin until non-contagious. They are also asked not to proceed ashore, and any shore excursion costs will be refunded. Room service is provided to affected passengers and every effort is made to make them as comfortable as possible."
Of the 194 QM2 passengers who had fallen sick, said Chase, all but 12 had recovered as of Friday.
'Norovirus?active on board'
In a post on the message board cruisecritic.com on Wednesday, a woman who said her daughter was on the QM2 said she "just received a message from her indicating that the Norovirus is active on board."
On Thursday, someone reporting being on the ship posted that "the restaurants are still full. The Captain last night recommended that people take all of their meals in the full-service restaurants rather than the buffet, but the buffet remains open as of this morning. We've been kept informed daily of the persistent cases."
Another post said: "The crew are working like crazy to service all the guests. At lunch today I noticed the hand rails on the promenade deck were wiped three times in about 1 hour."
In response to the outbreak, the QM2 crew has increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, the CDC said, and is asking passengers and crew to report cases of illness and "encourage hand hygiene."
Medical personnel are also collecting stool specimens from ill passengers and crew, which a CDC lab will analyze to make a definitive diagnosis.
When the QM2 docks in Brooklyn, an officer from the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program and an epidemiologist will board, conduct an environmental health assessment "and evaluate the outbreak and response activities," the CDC said.
Two officers boarded the Emerald Princess, also owned by Carnival, when it arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Thursday and are conducting an environmental assessment.
The Vessel Sanitation Program has authority to inspect cruise ships that carry 13 or more passengers and call at U.S. ports. It gave the Queen Mary 2 a perfect 100 on its most recent inspection this past summer, but found a few minor infractions, including a lack of serving utensils with breakfast pastries at a buffet.

"Basketball Wives: L.A." star Draya Michelle went in on Meek Mill's alleged former jumpoff, a girl named Brittney, on Twitter after the girl sent a "miss you" tweet to Meek. Draya has been denying for months that she was dating Meek, but the tweets seem to prove otherwise.
The two began trading insults online, but Brit took it to a different level when she started bashing Draya's parenting skills, and calling her son "an orphan."

Isheforreal set to restart Romford campaign with a win in Coral Supports The RGOA Standard
Isheforreal is no stranger to tasting success at Romford and, after doing the goods at Peterborough, he is all set to resume his journey on a winning note round this venue. Although the white and black dog is facing a very strong opposition, one can expect him to pick up where he left off.
The David Pruhs-trained was an amazing winner on his previous venture here. On December 7th, he demonstrated an excellent show, beating Sharons Return by three and a quarter lengths. After doing a great job here, the dashing hound went to Peterborough, and displayed a couple of great acts.
After missing the gold medal only by half a length on December 12th, the 2-year-old lifted the standards, and clinched a handsome win last time out. He always led the proceedings, and eventually bagged the first prize by two and a half lengths.
The son of Royal Impact, out of Thai Girl, is returning to his favourite venue with plenty of determination. There is nothing wrong with his current rhythm, and he just needs to deliver his best to take the first prize.
Among his rivals are: Sharons Return, Millwards Matt, Nans Turbo, Broadacres Buddy, and Joe Bones. The race will be run over 400 metres. The competition will be for a prize of 175 pounds.
Sharons Return will hold all the aces if trapping well. The black dog is full of confidence after a fine 2?-length triumph over Nans Turbo. Consistency is Sharons Return?s forte, and it is not hard to expect him to run well.
Millwards Matt will exploit the inside crowding. The black dog lost his rhythm after winning a race at Poole, and could only seize the third place last time around. Broadacres Buddy battled on well latest, but this is a stronger race. Despite having the draw in favour, the black dog does not turn us on.
Nans Turbo is a real credit to the connections, and needs to apply early moves to be competitive in this meeting. Joe Bones has no margin for errors against this opposition. Good luck to all the contestants.

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers at McGill University have discovered that a key regulator of energy metabolism in cancer cells known as the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) may play a crucial role in restricting cancer cell growth. AMPK acts as a "fuel gauge" in cells; AMPK is turned on when it senses changes in energy levels, and helps to change metabolism when energy levels are low, such as during exercise or when fasting. The researchers found that AMPK also regulates cancer cell metabolism and can restrict cancer cell growth.
The discovery was made by Russell (Rusty) Jones, an assistant professor at McGill's Goodman Cancer Research Centre and the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine. Jones along with his team is the first to show that AMPK can act as a tumour suppressor in animals. The research will be published December 27 in the journal Cell Metabolism.
"Cancer is a disease in which cells lose their normal restraints on growth and start to divide uncontrollably. But, in order for cells to grow quickly they need enough energy to complete the task," Jones explained. "AMPK acts like the fuel gauge in your car -- it lets the body know when energy levels are low, and stops cell growth until there is enough gas in the tank. We wanted to see if this fuel gauge could affect the development and progression of cancer. We found that mice lacking AMPK developed tumours faster, suggesting that AMPK is important for keeping tumour development in check, at least for some types of cancer." For this study, Jones' team focused specifically on a type of blood cancer known as lymphoma. They discovered that the protein Myc, which is activated in more than half of all cancers, could promote lymphoma more rapidly when mice were deficient for AMPK.
One of the ways cancer cells support their enhanced rate of growth is by changing their metabolism, or how they generate energy. Cancer cells are different from normal cells in our body because they preferentially use sugar to fuel their growth. Jones discovered that AMPK plays a specific role in restricting cancer cells' ability to use sugar to fuel their growth. "For cancer cells with low AMPK levels, their metabolism goes into overdrive," explained Prof. Jones. "They use sugar more efficiently, allowing them to grow faster. These results suggest that turning on AMPK in cancer cells may be one way that we can restrict cancer growth."
Jones' breakthrough builds on his previous discovery that the widely prescribed medication metformin, a common diabetes drug, can restrict tumour cell growth. The results bring promise that common therapeutics that turn on AMPK and alter cellular metabolism, such as metformin, may become novel tools for cancer therapy. Jones and his colleagues at McGill are currently exploring clinical applications based on this research.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. consumers peering over the "fiscal cliff" don't like what they see.
Fears of sharp tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect next week sent consumer confidence tumbling in December to its lowest level since August.
The Conference Board said Thursday that its consumer confidence index fell for the second straight month in December to 65.1, down from 71.5 in November.
The survey showed consumers' outlook for the next six months deteriorated to its lowest level since 2011 ? a signal to Lynn Franco, the board's director of economic indicators, that consumers are worried about the tax hikes and spending cuts that take effect Jan. 1 if the White House and Congress can't reach a budget deal.
Stocks plummeted after the report was released. Earlier this week a report showed consumers held back shopping this holiday season, another indication of their concerns about possible tax increases.
The December drop in confidence "is obvious confirmation that a sudden and serious deterioration in hopes for the future took place in December ? presumably reflecting concern about imminent 'fiscal cliff' tax increases," said Pierre Ellis, an economist with Decision Economics.
The decline in confidence comes at a critical time when the economy is showing signs of improvement elsewhere.
A recovery in housing market is looking more sustainable. On Thursday, the government said new-home sales increased in November at the fastest seasonally adjusted annual pace in 2? years.
And the job market has made slow but steady gains in recent months. The average number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits over the past month fell to the lowest level since March 2008.
But the political wrangling in Washington threatens the economy's slow, steady progress.
President Barack Obama and House returned to Washington Thursday to resume talks with just days to go before the deadline.
But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned that the government appears to be headed over the "fiscal cliff" because talks had gone nowhere. The Nevada Democrat made the comments minutes after the consumer confidence report was released.
The combination of weaker consumer confidence and dimming hopes of a deal on the "fiscal cliff" hit financial markets hard Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 132 points in early-afternoon trading. Broader indexes also declined.
A short fall over the cliff won't push the economy into recession. But most economists expect some tax increases to take effect next year. That could slow economic growth.
While consumers are more worried about where the economy is headed, they were upbeat about present conditions, according to the latest survey. Their assessment of current economic conditions rose this month to the highest level since August 2008.
A key reason for that is gas prices hit a 2012 low of $3.21 a gallon last week. Normally, that would prompt consumers to spend more on holiday shopping.
But the opposite has happened. A report from MasterCard Advisors Spending pulse indicated sales grew in the two months before Christmas at the weakest rate since 2008, when the country was in a deep recession.
There were other distractions this holiday season. In late October, Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, which account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales. That coupled with the presidential election, hurt sales during the first half of November.
Shopping picked up in the second half of November. But "fiscal cliff" worries dampened sales in December.
The National Retail Federation, the nation's largest retail trade group, remains optimistic that sales won't be quite as bad as earlier reports have suggested. It is sticking to its forecast for total sales for November and December to be up 4.1 percent to $586.1 billion this year. That's more than a percentage point lower than the growth in each of the past two years, and the smallest increase since 2009 when sales were up just 0.3 percent.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (Reuters) - Three New Jersey police officers were shot and wounded on Friday at their police station, and one was in surgery for his wounds, a hospital official said.
Local TV news reported that the suspected gunman was killed in the exchange of gunfire at the police station in Gloucester Township, New Jersey, about 16 miles from Philadelphia. The TV report said the suspect had been brought in for a domestic incident.
"A violent struggle occurred while the suspect was being processed," Gloucester Deputy Police Chief David Harkins said, according to Philadelphia TV station NBC10. The man was able to grab a gun and then opened fire.
The gunman was killed by police during the confrontation, Gloucester Police Chief W. Harry Earle said, according to the NBC10 report.
Gloucester Township Police declined to comment on the incident or to confirm the NBC10 report. An officer answering the phone said a press statement would be issued later, and a press conference was scheduled for Friday afternoon.
The three wounded police officers, two men and a woman, were brought to Cooper University Hospital shortly after 6 a.m. EST, hospital spokeswoman Lori Shaffer said.
Two of the officers suffered minor wounds, but one of the three, a male, required surgery, Shaffer said. She had no more information on the extent of the officer's wounds.
Part of the Gloucester Township municipal complex, which houses the police department, was cordoned off by yellow police tape on Friday. Residents described it as a quiet community.
"It's really a safe neighborhood," said Kim Kavanaugh, 47, who lives across the street from the complex with her husband and two grown children.
Her husband Don Kavanaugh, 49, said he arrived home from his overnight work shift about 5 a.m. "About 6 o'clock I saw a bunch of flashing lights. I didn't think nothing of it, I see flashing lights in and out of there all the time," he said.
The incident follows several recent multiple shootings in the United States, and comes two weeks after a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
One week ago in western Pennsylvania, a man with a pistol fatally shot three people and then opened fire on police. Three officers were injured in that incident, one in a collision from a car chase with the gunman, another from bullet fragments to the face and a third who was struck with gunfire to the chest but survived because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

The remorse felt by Himali Chungda Sherpa after he killed three snow leopard cubs in retaliation for his lost cattle inspired him to set up a scheme to prevent other herders from doing the same.
Sherpa lost his cattle near Ghunsa village at the base of Mount Kangchenjunga on the Nepal-India border, later finding their remains in a cave beside three sleeping snow leopard cubs.
The Nepalese herder put the cubs in a sack and threw them into the river, finding their bodies the next day.
?From that night onwards the mother snow leopard started crying from the mountain for her cubs, and my cattle were crying for the loss of their calves.
?I realised how big a sin I had committed and promised myself that I would never do such a thing in the future.?
Four years ago Sherpa, 48, founded with other locals an insurance plan for livestock that conservationists say is deterring herders from killing snow leopards that attack their animals.
In doing so the scheme has given hope for the endangered cat, whose numbers across the mountains of 12 countries in south and central Asia are thought to have declined by 20 percent over the past 16 years.
Under the scheme, herders pay in 55 rupees ($1.50) a year for each of their hairy yaks, the vital pack animal that is also kept for milk and meat, and are paid 2,500 rupees for any animal killed by the endangered cat.
?The (Himalayan) communities have been able to pay out compensation for more than 200 animals since the scheme started,? WWF Nepal conservation director Ghana Gurung told reporters at a presentation in the capital Kathmandu.
?The community members are the ones that monitor this, they are the ones who do the patrolling and they are the ones who verify the kills.?
The global snow leopard population is estimated at just 4,080-6,590 adults according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which lists the animal as ?endangered? on its red list of threatened species.
Experts believe just 300 to 500 adults survive in Nepal, and few can claim ever to have seen the secretive, solitary ?mountain ghost?, which lives 5,000 to 6,000 metres (16,500 to 20,000 feet) above sea level.
Despite its name, it is not a close relative of the leopard and has much more in common genetically with the tiger, though it is thought to have a placid temperament.
?There has never been a case of a snow leopard attacking a human,? Gurung said of the animal, revered for its thick grey patterned pelt.
It does, however, have a taste for sheep, goats and other livestock essential for the livelihoods of farmers and is often killed by humans either as a preventative measure or in revenge for the deaths of their animals.
WWF Nepal revealed details of its insurance scheme in filmed interviews shown at the recent Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.
Sherpa now campaigns to convince Himalayan farmers that killing snow leopards is wrong, but has been frequently told they need to kill the animal to protect their livelihoods.
?I swear if I can catch a snow leopard. They rob our animals and our source of livelihood,? herder Chokyab Bhuttia told the WWF.
The insurance plan, which also covers sheep and goats, was set up with 1.2 million rupees donated by the University of Zurich.
Since the Kangchenjunga Conservation Area Snow Leopard Insurance plan was launched four years ago no snow leopard is thought to have been killed in retaliation for preying on livestock since.
Locals, who count the number of cattle attacked as well as tracks, fecal pellets and scratches in the ground, believe snow leopard numbers have significantly increased.
?There is now an awareness among people that the snow leopard is an endangered animal and we have to protect it. The insurance policy has made people more tolerant to the loss of their livestock,? Sherpa said.
He believes protecting the snow leopard is vital to boosting the economy in an area which gets just a few hundred trekkers a year, compared with 74,000 in Annapurna.
?If a tourist sees a snow leopard and takes a picture of it there will be publicity of our region and more tourists will come,? Sherpa said.
Evidence of the scheme?s benefits will remain anecdotal until the publication next year of the results of a wide-ranging camera trapping survey.
But locals are optimistic about the animal?s future, according to Tsheten Dandu Sherpa, chairman of the Kangchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council.
?In this area there was never any poaching of snow leopards for trade. They were killed only as a retaliatory act by livestock owners,? he said.
?Now with this insurance policy there will definitely be protection of the snow leopard and its numbers will increase.?

When entering into affiliate promotion, you create partnerships with your affiliates. Parent companies may not provide direct day-to-day assistance, but you need to work within the constraints they set to benefit both you and the company. While hard work is wonderful, at times it is not enough. Advice provided in this article can fill in some overlooked perspectives.
If your target audience is older this will be especially important. By making your font size larger by even a point or two, you can increase your sales opportunities. If customers can read about your product, they are more likely to purchase it.
TIP! Look for a company with a high rate of sales conversion when choosing a affiliate program. Use a one percent ratio for a benchmark.
Never abuse this feature. The very best you can do with cookie stuffing is annoy your readers. This method can break the chains of affiliate tracking and it can also spread viruses.
To achieve success in affiliate marketing, taking the time to familiarize yourself with proven effective methods is one of the most important steps you will take. It is easy to jump on a free option the first time you look at marketing methods. There is absolutely nothing wrong with free, unless it does not help you in achieving your goals.
Have an accountant. You can hire a person, or go through a program. This way you can pay yourself for the hours of work you perform. Have your accounting plan in place before opening your business.
TIP! Make sure that you keep up with all of the latest information that is affecting the industry. Strive to stay one step ahead of your competitors, or they will be one the ones getting the business instead of you.
It is more useful to use a few good tips than to know a dozen. You will be taking a slight risk by putting your efforts into affiliate promotion programs prior to being compensated. If you are simply reading, eventually this will turn into delays. Put down the books, choose a few good tips and put them into action.
Produce a fresh, original, and creative newsletter that will make your potential customers decide to join your marketing list. When email first came into being, people enjoyed receiving them. You do not want people to think your emails are spam, so create them in a friendly and easy-to-use way.
It is important to have backlinks on your site, but make sure you don?t deceive your customers. A reader clicking on a ?No-cost ways to cure your insomnia? link does not want to end up on a page that barrages them with hard-sell tactics to buy insomnia supplements. Advertising your website as something it is not will not help you and your audience will not trust you.
TIP! Many people in the affiliate marketing world try to work to hard to become ?superb? affiliates. They end up doing too much at once becoming spread too thin and they end up no longer being able to compete in the marketplace.
You should use many different venues to advertise and promote your affiliate products. Many people love to search for online products. Some might prefer brochures and fliers. Some customers want to have a coupon for a percentage off the price. The broader the scope of your advertising, the more customers you can draw in.
When getting involved in internet marketing, it?s important to work with an affiliate company that has products you truly believe in and would be happy to promote and sell. Using a range of affiliate networks should provide you with multiple streams of income. Research the affiliate programs thoroughly before working with them. You need to know that you will feel comfortable promoting their products.
You will lose many of your initial customers, and you will need to get more people on board. In order to attract the attention of potential new customers from the very first moment they hear from you, you?ll need to have your best-performing emails on file.
TIP! Make use of an affiliate network. These networks can be useful to connect advertisers and webmasters.
You should not be looking to steal customers from others, but instead present your own business as the best option to fulfill any potential customer?s needs. The following advice gives some successful tips for affiliate promotion.

Nouel Alba, 37, of the Bronx, N.Y., was arrested Thursday on a federal criminal complaint charging her with lying to FBI agents in connection with their investigation into a fraudulent fund-raising scheme related to the Newtown school shooting tragedy. The arrest came less than a week after Alba was the subject of a Rossen Reports investigation on TODAY.
The parents of Noah Pozner, 6, who was killed in the tragic shooting ?at Sandy Hook Elementary School, had just laid their son to rest this week, when Noah's uncle says a scammer took to the web, posing as Noah's aunt and requesting donations to her personal Paypal account. NBC's Jeff Rossen reports.
On Dec. 21, TODAY aired? a segment that included an interview with Alba conducted by NBC's Jeff Rossen through the front door of her home (Alba refused to appear on camera, but consented to an audio interview). During the interview, Alba denied posing on Facebook as the aunt of Noah Pozner, a 6-year-old victim of the Sandy Hook shooting, and soliciting donations in his memory. "I never sent any message on Facebook," Alba told Rossen.
"Then why is your account number on it, your bank routing number, your email, and your PayPal information?" Rossen asked.
TODAY
Jeff Rossen interviews alleged scammer Nouel Alba through a door.
"Because I sell things online," Nouel replied.
"Because you sell things online? But then why were you posing to be a member of the Pozner family? They say they've never met you before."
"I never did that," Alba claimed. She alleged that someone else posted the fraudulent message using her account, and told Rossen that she refunded donation money that had been sent to her account.
But the criminal complaint filed against Alba on Thursday alleges that Alba not only used her Facebook account, but telephone calls and text messages to falsely claim to be a relative of a shooting victim and solicit money she claimed was for the child?s ?funeral fund.? It also alleged that Alba falsely claimed to have immediately refunded any donations that she received.
Following her arrest, Alba appeared before United States Magistrate Thomas P. Smith in Hartford, Conn., and was released on a $50,000 bond. If convicted of making false statements to federal agents, she faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

These days, most everyone is familiar with an autoresponder, although many don?t know why they are beneficial to businesses. If you aren?t familiar with autoresponders, you would probably find yourself amazed with them. An autoresponder can help your business by automatically emailing your clients and customers with a preset message that will help to increase your sales.
An autoresponder can help your list of clients grow, even send each one of them their own personalized email message. If you choose, you can also follow up each individual email with repeated emails, varying the content whenever you wish. These programs will also allow you to keep track of conversations, and send out broadcast email messages whenever you have news or new products to offer your clients.
As research in the past has shown, personalized email from autoresponders is a great way to boost your business. When you send a personalized email to one of your clients, the autoresponder by can address him or her by their name ? which always makes a customer take notice. While you could do this yourself using traditional email, it could take you a few hours if you have a long list of customers.
Autoresponders make sending personalized email a snap. All you need to do is set up your email template, then select where you like the name to go. You can add everyone in your customer list to the autoresponder, which makes sending emails a snap. Once you have everything ready to go, all you need to do is send out the emails with one simple click. Best of all ? you don?t have to set it up again when you need to send out broadcast messages.
Although there are some people who will buy products after one or two emails, most people require about seven or eight emails before they will purchase anything. Autoresponders can really help you there, as they will do all of the emailing for you. You don?t have to keep sending manual emails or anything like that. All you need to do is set up the email address, type in your preset message, and then feel free to send it as many times as you like.
Through the use of an autoresponder you can really boost your business. If you run an Internet marketing business, this tool will prove to be invaluable. You can spend less time sending messages ? and more time doing what you enjoy. If you?ve never tried an autoresponder before, you owe it yourself to check out everything they will do for you and your business. Online businesses can get a lot of emails on a daily basis ? which is where the autoresponder will really start to shine and show you just how great of an asset it really is.

Things are looking a lot more inspiring in this second part of the year. In this new season of fall and winter movies there should be something for everyone. There are action movies, family movies, Oscar worthy dramas, and some spicy comedies coming up in the next third of the year.
But it does. bancuri can help you to heal from depression and stress. It can even do more: if you make a habit of looking for laughter, it can even promote your long-term good health. It might even help you to find new kindred spirits with whom you can share your sense of humor. Anyone who can help you to again experience the whimsy, amusing ironies, joyfulness and chortles or even guffaws that spring out of living a positive life is worth keeping around.
Johnny Depp is the star of this movie. Intrigue, danger, and romance will become his nemesis in The Tourist, after he has a playful romance with a stranger. Frank (Depp), takes a trip to Europe to forget a bad love affair and meets Elise, with whom he involves himself in an encounter that has been engineered by Elise. A terrible game of cat and mouse ensues through Paris and Vienna as their romance evolves.
The pianists we see play appear to be the most formal and respectable stars on the stage. They hold the power and the breath of the audiences. They could look intimidating in their formal suits not to mention the authority and the air of arrogance they exude while on stage. They can be captivating.
There is an exercise I call the Pink Tu Tu tactic. Learn to use it on someone you fear, are angry at, or someone you feel has power over you. Simply visualize that person dancing in a bright neon pink Tu Tu. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and completely strip them of any power you thought they had over you.
There are benefits beyond the fun to this kind of silliness. Have you noticed that "going green" and saving money often involve the same behaviors? "Use it up. Wear it out. Recycle it." is good for both the environment and the pocketbook. And if you can find fun ways to do it, it's also good for your sense of well-being.
With the world going at a really crazy pace, people forget to stop and smile a bit. Most of these mistakes can be frustrating and depressing.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Visitors coming to the nation's capital for President Barack Obama's second inauguration can't stay in the one place President Ronald Reagan's family once called an eight-star hotel. That spot is the White House, and it's booked for the next four years. Still, inauguration-goers have a range of lodging options ? from crashing on a friend's couch to rooms that cost thousands of dollars a night.
With second inaugurations tending to draw fewer spectators, finding a place to stay in Washington won't be nearly as difficult as in 2009.
City officials are expecting 600,000 to 800,000 visitors for the Jan. 21 inauguration, far less than the 1.8 million people who flooded the National Mall four years ago to witness the inauguration of America's first black president. Back then, some hotels sold out months in advance and city residents rented out their homes for hundreds of dollars a night. This time, hotels say they're filling up more slowly, with rooms still available and prices at or slightly below where they were four years ago.
"Very few hotels are actually sold out at this point, so there's a lot of availability," said Elliott Ferguson, CEO of the tourism bureau Destination DC, who added that he expected demand to pick up after Christmas.
In 2009, hotel occupancy in the city for the night before the inauguration was 98 percent, and visitors paid an average daily rate of more than $600 that night, according to STR, a company that tracks hotel data. This time, some hotels still have half their rooms available. As a result, some establishments have relaxed minimum stays from four nights to three and could drop prices closer to the inauguration if demand does not increase.
Despite the muted enthusiasm, many of the city's posh hotels are still offering pricy packages. Visitors with an unlimited budget can check in to accommodations almost as grand and historic as the White House.
At The Willard hotel, about a block from the White House, rooms were still available starting at more than $1,100 a night with a four-night minimum. That means every guest will pay more than President Abraham Lincoln did when he checked out after his 1861 inauguration and paid $773.75 for a stay of more than a week.
At the Park Hyatt hotel in northwest Washington, where rooms start at $849 a night with a four-night minimum stay, the presidential suite is still available. For the 57th presidential inauguration next month, the hotel is charging $57,000 for a four-night package in the suite that includes butler service. And no one has yet booked $100,000 packages at the Fairmont hotel or the Ritz-Carlton.
A number of the city's luxury hotels plan special treats for guests, some of whom will be paying two to five times as much to stay during the inauguration compared with staying in the same room a week before. At the Ritz-Carlton, for example, where rooms start at about $1,100 per day, guests will get to bring home commemorative pillowcases embroidered with the official inauguration seal and their initials.
There are options for visitors looking to spend less, too, though some wallet-friendly choices have filled quickly.
Rooms at HI-DC, a hostel in downtown Washington, were sold out the day after the Nov. 6 election, with a bed in a dorm room going for $50 a night and private rooms for $150. With all the rooms sold, the hostel is finalizing plans for an election trivia night for guests.
Aunt Bea's Little White House, a six-room bed and breakfast in northeast Washington, still had two rooms available the week before Christmas, with rates starting at $225 a night. Innkeeper Gerald Duval said that included a bottle of champagne and a commemorative coin. There'll also be red-and-white bunting on the home's porch along with cutouts of the president and first lady.
Farther from downtown, the Best Western Plus hotel in Rockville, Md., was about 80 percent full with rooms at about $180 a night, down from a $209 starting rate. Director of Sales Ron Wallach said the hotel targeted some groups before the election, including students, journalists and the Secret Service, in order to fill its rooms.
Other travelers looking for budget-friendly prices may have success with websites like Craigslist or Airbnb, where homeowners offer their places for a price. More than 200 Craigslist housing posts in the area included the word "inauguration." Airbnb said it expected approximately 2,000 people to stay in Washington during the inauguration using its site.
Other travelers have told friends and family living in the area to plan on having guests. Lauren Hines and her husband had three people stay at their small Capitol Hill apartment during the 2009 inauguration, so many that one slept in a hallway. She and her husband now live in nearby Alexandria, Va., and planned to host her father-in-law, and maybe mother-in-law, from Ohio. Hines said they didn't even consider a hotel.
"They know that they've always got a place with us," she said.
