Report: Trade Rumors Involving Rajon Rondo, Mavericks Deemed ?Ridiculous? by NBA Sources

Rajon Rondo, Kyrie Irving,Tristan Thompson

It looks like Rajon Rondo may not be headed to Texas after all.

Multiple news outlets reported Friday afternoon that the Dallas Mavericks have contacted the Celtics about possibly acquiring the All-Star point guard. Just hours later, NBA sources are reportedly shooting down that theory.

?The Celtics haven?t had any conversations with Dallas about Rondo,? one source told the Boston Herald?s Mark Murphy. ?That?s ridiculous. There?s no truth to it. What in the world does Dallas have to offer for Rondo??

?They?re trying to rebuild around a 37-year-old Dirk Nowitzki,? another league source told Murphy. ?They have a lot of old expiring contracts, and that?s about it.?

The Mavs are one of the NBA?s older teams, with six players with more than 10 years of NBA experience currently on their roster. The reported motivation behind a possible deal for Rondo was to make one final championship push with 35-year-old Dirk Nowitzki, who is entering his 16th season, and to help draw disgruntled Lakers center Dwight Howard to Dallas.

Dallas used a draft-night trade to acquire University of Miami point guard Shane Larkin, whom the Celtics also reportedly showed interest in.

Rondo has averaged 11.1 points, 8.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game over his seven-year career. He has not played since tearing his ACL on Jan. 27.

Glastonbury hosts heaven, hell and haircuts alongside the music

By Isla Binnie

PILTON, England (Reuters) - Tomato fights, anarchic gymnasts and astrophysics drew festival-goers of all ages away from the mainstream music acts at Britain's Glastonbury festival this weekend.

The 1,500 hippies who paid one pound ($1.52) to attend the first Glastonbury festival in 1970 would barely recognize the massive three-day event, where around 150,000 fans were watching 2,000 acts on 58 stages, alongside thousands of workshops and stalls.

The Rolling Stones, who were headlining the festival on Saturday for the first time in their 50-year career, were guaranteed to draw a huge audience, but many preferred to seek out the smaller venues and avoid the heaving crowds.

"I'm usually not so into the huge stages. I like the ones that are more intimate," said Sean-Tastic, one half of the Irish dance and comedy duo Lords of Struts.

With their farcical gymnastics routine, the neon lycra-clad pair drew an enthusiastic crowd to an outdoor stage in the festival's Cabaret area.

Dancing in silence was the theme of one of the festival's late-night events. After dark, a sprawling 900-acre site transformed into a pulsating strobe-lit playground where revelers dance to music played on flashing headphones.

Another nocturnal venue, the Shangri-La area, adopted a heaven and hell theme, offering golden wristbands and entry to a mud-free haven to those approved by the Desk of Judgment.

The Latin-themed Common area, where staff stalked around dressed as the dead, was due to host a tomato fight on Sunday, imitating the annual Tomatina festival in eastern Spain.

Less messy activities included getting a novelty hairstyle.

"I get a bit bored by some of the things on the main stages," said Flo Lipin, 35, as she queued outside a caravan called "Total Eclipse of the Head" for a haircut themed on music styles of the music of the 1970s, '80s or '90s.

"The smaller things are more interesting - and sillier."

For those who agreed with Stones front man Mick Jagger that rock'n'roll can be "intellectually undemanding", celebrity astrophysicist Brian Cox was due to talk about the mysteries of the universe and veteran protest singer Billy Bragg was debating politics and feminism in the Left Field tent.

With the average age of Glastonbury revelers now hitting 36 and more families attending, there were also family-friendly attractions such as a circus and clay modeling.

Craft-minded festival-goers could choose between workshops on making Mongolian-style tents, magic wands, or jewellery out of drink-can ring-pulls.

"The wonderful thing about Glastonbury is that I feel so safe here and it is great for families," said Nancy Laws, 35, at the festival with her 3-year-old son Joshua and 10-month-old daughter Amelie. "There is a really relaxed vibe."

Supreme Court petitioned to reimpose California gay marriage ban

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Opponents of gay marriage petitioned the Supreme Court on Saturday to immediately reinstate a 5-year-old ban on same-sex matrimony in California, saying a federal appeals court had acted prematurely in removing the prohibition on gay nuptials.

Supporters of the gay marriage ban, known as Proposition 8, which California voters approved in 2008, asked the high court to overrule a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals order on Friday lifting a stay that had kept same-sex unions outlawed.

Friday's surprise removal of the stay launched a flurry of swiftly arranged weddings by gay and lesbian couples up and down the state following a Supreme Court decision on Wednesday to let stand a 2010 lower-court opinion striking down Prop 8 as unconstitutional.

But opponents said the three-judge panel of the appeals court had jumped the gun in lifting its injunction before a 25-day "reconsideration" period at the Supreme Court had elapsed.

The Arizona-based group Alliance Defending Freedom argued that the 9th Circuit lacked authority to act when it did, and that it violated the terms of its own stay requiring that it remain in place "until final disposition by the Supreme Court."

The alliance asserted that final disposition could not occur before passage of the 25 days the Supreme Court normally gives petitioners to seek a re-hearing, in this case Prop 8 backers who were denied legal standing to appeal the 2010 decision.

But the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which sponsored the federal court challenge to Prop 8, issued a statement insisting that the 9th Circuit acted under its own "broad discretion" to issue its stay in the first place.

"Now that the Supreme Court has decided that the injunction against Proposition 8 must stand, it was entirely appropriate for the 9th circuit to dissolve its stay of that injunction," the alliance said in a statement.

Foundation attorney Ted Boutrous told reporters on a conference call on Friday that the 9th Circuit's move was hardly unprecedented and that appeals courts have taken similar actions in "much more boring cases than this" without drawing much notice.

Prop 8 supporters, he said, "should hang it up and quit trying to stop people from getting married."

The emergency petition seeking to bring gay marriages to a halt came as dozens of same-sex couples lined up at San Francisco City Hall for a second straight day since the appeals court lifted its stay against the 2010 decision by U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker barring further enforcement of Prop 8.

Higher genetic risk tied to lifetime asthma suffering

June 28, 2013 ? Children with more genetic risks for asthma are not only more likely to develop the condition at a young age, but they are also more likely to continue to suffer with asthma into adulthood. The finding reported by Duke University researchers is one of the latest to come from a 40-year longitudinal study of New Zealanders.

"We've been able to look at how newly discovered genetic risks relate to the life course of asthma at an unprecedented level of resolution," said Daniel Belsky, a postdoctoral fellow at the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy and the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development.

Earlier studies had linked several genes to small increases in asthma risk. Belsky, along with Duke's Avshalom Caspi, Terrie Moffit and others, wanted to know whether those individual risks literally add up. They looked to the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, an effort to examine the behavior and health -- including lung function -- of 1,037 individuals who have been tracked since their birth in Dunedin, New Zealand during a 12-month period from 1972-1973.

Belsky and his colleagues calculated a genetic risk score for each of 880 individuals in the Dunedin cohort by summing the number of risk variants each of them carried. They then asked whether those scores were related to the development and course of asthma from early childhood through midlife.

Indeed, they were. Those at higher genetic risk developed asthma earlier in life than did those with lower risk. Among the Dunedin study participants who developed asthma in childhood, those with higher genetic risk scores were also more likely to suffer with persistent asthma into adulthood. They more often had allergic reactions associated with severe and persistent asthma and developed problems with lung function.

Their quality of life suffered too, as those with higher genetic risk missed work and school more often and were more often admitted to the hospital because of asthma.

Belsky said there is still a long way to go before genetic risk scores like this one can be used in routine medical practice. In the meantime, the study could lead to a better understanding of the biology of asthma and advance research to devise new treatment and prevention strategies.

In the United States, 26 million people suffer from asthma, including more than 7 million children, according to the latest estimates from the Centers for Disease Control. Those numbers are growing every year at a cost of billions of dollars.

"It will be important to explore how these genetic risks play out in environments that differ in terms of air pollution or other important, modifiable factors," Belsky said.

PITTSBURGH, June 28, 2013 -- A single systemic dose of special immune cells prevented rejection for almost four months in a preclinical animal model of kidney transplantation, according to experts at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Their findings, now available in the online version of the American Journal of Transplantation, could lay the foundation for eventual human trials of the technique.

Organ transplantation has saved many lives, but at the cost of sometimes lifelong requirements for powerful immunosuppressive medication that can have serious side effects, said senior investigator Angus Thomson, Ph.D., D.Sc., distinguished professor of surgery and of immunology, Pitt School of Medicine. Scientists have long sought ways to encourage the organ recipient's immune system to accept or tolerate the donor organ to reduce the need for drugs to stave off rejection.

"This study shows it is possible to prepare the patient's immune system for a donor kidney by administering specially treated immune cells from the donor in advance of the transplant surgery," Dr. Thomson said. "This could be very helpful in the context of planned kidney donations from living relatives, and could one day be adapted to transplantation from deceased donors."

For the project, the research team generated immune cells called dendritic cells (DCs) from the blood of rhesus macaques that would later provide a kidney to recipient monkeys. Dendritic cells are known to be key regulators of the immune system by showing antigens to T-cells to either activate them against the foreign protein or to suppress the T-cell response. The researchers treated the donor DCs in the lab to prevent them from fully maturing and having the capacity to trigger an immune reaction against foreign proteins.

One week before having a kidney transplant, recipient monkeys received a single infusion of treated DCs obtained from their respective donor animals. Another group of monkeys was transplanted without receiving the cells, but both groups were given the same regimen of immunosuppression drugs, a modified protocol for experimental purposes that eventually results in donor organ rejection. The researchers found that the donor kidney was rejected in about 40 days among animals that got only the drugs, but survived for about 113 days in the group that had a prior infusion of treated DCs.

The modified donor DCs sent signals to the recipient immune system to stay quiet and not launch an attack against the donor organ, explained lead author Mohamed Ezzelerab, M.D., research assistant professor, Department of Surgery, Pitt School of Medicine.

"The results indicate that we achieved immune system regulation without side effects of the DCs, but better yet, the monkeys were healthier from a clinical perspective," he said. "They maintained a better weight, had less protein in the urine and fewer signs of kidney damage than the other group. Ultimately, all these factors played a role in prolonging organ survival in the group that received DC therapy."

Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs color-matching backlit soft keys (hands-on)

Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs colormatching backlit soft keys handson

After the official product shot leaked in late May, we knew it wouldn't be long before Huawei's Ascend W2 makes an official appearance. Well, today's the day, but as the company's second-ever Windows Phone device, the W2's appearance at Mobile Asia Expo was surprisingly low key. According to the spec sheet at Huawei's booth, this affordable phone comes with a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display (looked like IPS to us) and a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8230 SoC (same as the W1 but faster) with 512MB RAM. There's 8GB of built-in storage along with microSD expansion -- the slot is located next to the removable 1,700mAh battery plus full-size SIM slot, all underneath the red or yellow back cover.

Even though Huawei doesn't hide the fact that the W2 is a low-cost device, it's actually not too shabby. Most notably, the three usual soft keys are color backlit and will match your desired theme in Windows Phone 8. As a bonus, the touchscreen has a glove mode -- as featured on several other more recent Huawei phones -- for the cold winter days. There's still no price or date announced just yet, but since this particular model packs a TD-SCDMA radio for China Mobile, folks outside China will have to wait for the WCDMA variant. For now, we have a hands-on video for you after the break.

Thales takes lead on 'dark explorer'

The European Space Agency (Esa) has appointed Thales Alenia Space (TAS) of Italy to lead the construction of its "dark explorer", Euclid.

The organisation's Industrial Policy Committee has approved the issuing of a contract worth 322m euros (?275m).

Euclid will launch in 2020 and look deep into the cosmos for clues to the nature of dark energy and dark matter.

These phenomena dominate the Universe, and yet scientists concede they know virtually nothing about them.

"Euclid will be so impressive; it will be a cosmologist's dream, and we are making it happen step by step," Prof Alvaro Gimenez, Esa's director of science, told BBC News.

The TAS contract, which will be signed in the coming weeks, completes the sourcing of the two major elements that make up Euclid.

A contract to build the payload module, which will hold the 1.2m telescope and two instruments, has already been awarded to Europe's other big space company, Astrium.

Its value, some 72m euros, will come out of the global sum that will now go to TAS as prime contractor.

Thales Alenia's job will be to direct the industrial project, constructing the spacecraft's basic structure and then integrating all other parts.

As is often the case with Esa science missions, the instruments will be delivered direct, and paid for, by individual member states.

Euclid will make its observations using a visible-light camera from the UK and a near-infrared camera/spectrometer from France.

The latter needs special detectors that will be acquired from a US specialist, Teledyne.

"As you know, we will be paying for the development of the infrared detectors but it is Nasa who will pay for the flight models," said Prof Gimenez.

By picking up this bill, in the region of 30m euros, the US space agency is effectively buying positions in the Euclid science consortium for 40 American researchers.

Distorted view

Dark energy and dark matter are two of the most pressing problems in science.

Dark energy and dark matter mysteries

  • Gravity acting across vast distances does not seem to explain what astronomers see
  • Galaxies, for example, should fly apart; some other mass must be there holding them together
  • Astrophysicists have thus postulated "dark matter" - invisible to us but clearly acting on galactic scales
  • At the greatest distances, the Universe's expansion is accelerating
  • Thus we have also "dark energy" which acts to drive the expansion, in opposition to gravity
  • The current theory holds that 68% of the Universe is dark energy, 27% is dark matter, and just 5% the kind of matter we know well

Together, they account for about 95% of the energy density in the cosmos, but researchers are nowhere near a description for either.

Dark energy is the name given to the "force" that appears to be driving the Universe apart at an accelerating rate.

Dark matter is the extra material that is unseen but which astronomers know to be there because of its gravitational effects on the matter we can observe. Galaxies, for example, could not hold their shape were it not for the presence of some additional "scaffolding".

Euclid will try to plot dark matter's distribution by looking for the subtle way its mass distorts the light coming from distant galaxies. It will do this over a third of the sky.

The mission will go after dark energy by mapping the three-dimensional distribution of galaxies. The patterns in the great voids that exist between these objects can be used as a kind of "yardstick" to measure the expansion through time.

Ground-based surveys have done this for small volumes of the sky; Euclid however will measure the precise positions of some two billion galaxies out to about 10 billion light-years from Earth.

And American involvement raises the prospect of an additional method being used to study dark energy. Many US scientists have used exploding stars, or supernovae, as the distance measure instead of galaxies. Euclid would be well equipped to try this approach also.

"It could happen. It would be a bonus, but first we intend to measure the galaxies to get at dark energy," Prof Gimenez told BBC News.

Euclid will launch on a Soyuz rocket and make its observations at a position about 1.5 million km from Earth.

Esa expects its total expenditure over the lifetime of the project to be just over 600m euros.

Need A Meme? Why Not Use Imgur's New Generator

zoidberg-1Imgur, the image host for Reddit and most of the internet, just launched its own meme creation tool. And it's about the best meme generator available. Custombuilt Katamari controller is made from a yoga ball, DualShock 2 controller, power of the cosmos video

Conventional wisdom would suggest that making a for-real Katamari Damacy ball would be tricky, but that didn't stop Chris McInnis, Ron LeBlanc and Tom Gwozdz taking up the challenge. As part of the Nuit Blanche festival in London, Canada (which also included some building-projected gaming), they were able to fashion their very own Katamari ball from a yoga ball, some stickers, wood, an Arduino microcontroller, several optical mice and a dissected DualShock 2 controller. See how it steers after the break.

Missing red panda from National Zoo found in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Animal keepers from the National Zoo have captured a red panda in a Washington neighborhood after it went missing from its enclosure at the zoo.

National Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson says the male named Rusty was captured Monday afternoon in a bush in the Adams Morgan neighborhood.

The red panda is being taken to the zoo's animal hospital for a checkup.

Unlike giant pandas, red pandas are not members of the bear family. Red pandas are slightly bigger than a domestic cat and look similar to a raccoon. They are listed as vulnerable in the wild.

Rusty arrived at the zoo in April from the zoo in Lincoln, Neb., and was in quarantine for several weeks until he went on exhibit in early June.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Zookeepers are searching for a red panda that has gone missing from its enclosure in Washington.

National Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson says animal keepers discovered the male named Rusty was missing Monday morning. They began searching the zoo at 8 a.m.

Unlike giant pandas, red pandas are not members of the bear family. Red pandas are slightly bigger than a domestic cat and look similar to a raccoon. They are listed as vulnerable in the wild.

Red pandas are highly territorial, so Baker-Masson says it's unlikely that Rusty traveled far. He is likely hiding high in a tree branch to hide in the tree canopy.

"Everybody continues to look for him," Baker-Masson said. "As the day heats up, he will likely sleep and hide."

Animal keepers last saw him Sunday evening about 6 p.m. when he was fed and appeared healthy. They believe he may stay in hiding during the day. They are also looking at the possibility that Rusty is sick or that someone took him.

Rusty arrived at the zoo in April from the zoo in Lincoln, Neb., and was in quarantine for several weeks until he went on exhibit in early June. Rusty is vaccinated and is not aggressive, but he is a wild animal and could bite if he became cornered and scared, Baker-Masson said.

The zoo began sending out messages about his disappearance Monday morning on Twitter in case someone sees him at the zoo.

"Unless he was very motivated, he would not wander far from his habitat," Baker-Masson said. "This red panda is not down on the (National) Mall."

Aerobics | Why I Love Aerobics Dvds? ? Article Dashboard - Fitness ...

I tried going to the gym in the evenings and I was yawning in the treadmill all the time, I couldn?t lift a leg, so I said maybe I am a morning person?, Yeah right. Kids are sick, have nightmares and more and my nights are cut into periods of sleep and their shouting : ?Mummy, mummy? (why is that they always want me and not my husband at night ah?). So going to the gym in the morning was pretty impossible, I was going to give up when one of the mothers in my son?s daycare mentiones aerobics dvds, I said ?wow, that could be my solution?.

I started to search online and found some good reviews on aerobic step dvd and cardio dvds and purchased some, my life has changed forever. I am much more energetic, I feel much better, I lost some weight and I gained some muscle.
For the newbies in the area, I put some information together on this aerobics routines, I am now truly an advocate or these dvds and recently purchased kickboxing dvds which are more advanced but I loved them.

    What is aerobic exercise?
Aerobics are a type of exercise that makes you sweat and feel your heart beating hard. The blood circulating through your veins is delivering oxygen to every part of your body, if you sustain this level of effort for more than just a few minutes while your heart, lungs, and muscles work overtime, you are doing aerobics exercise.

This rhythmic activity involves large muscle groups. Aerobic exercise makes the lungs work harder as the body?s need for oxygen is increased.

    Benefits
    * Increased energy levels
    * Stress reduction (endorphins are released when you exercise)
    * Higher metabolic rate (helps you lose weight even when you are resting)
    * Blood pressure reduction and much more.

    Aerobics at home
The cheapest options are putting on your favourite aerobics DVDs and dance around your living room.
In time, when you more ?pro? you can buy affordable exercising aids such as steps, skipping ropes, dance mats and more.
Aerobics dvds are a great way to exercise even if you have little time in between your busy day and you can do it in your own living room without driving to the local gym. So even when rains or snow there is no excuse.

The real benefits of aerobic exercise come from constant movement.

    How often to train?
For fitness it is recommended to exercise 3 to 5 times a week and for 30-60 minutes, not including warming up at the start and cooling down at the end. But there are theories nowadays that state that even 10-20 minutes every day can do the job.

When to raise your exercise level?
When you exercise try to step up your efforts whenever you reach a comfort zone, you should be out of breath but still capable of speaking when you are exercising, if it is less than that you should be progressing to the next level.

    How do I start?
Consult your physician. Then start slowly, if you have been inactive for some time, don?t start training for an hour every day.
If half an hour it?s too much, start with 10 minutes some days and then increase to 15 or 20 minute sessions the next week and so on. Listen to your body.

I really hope that you will find this solution as good as I did, and start training to get all the benefits of a healthier more energetic life.

Chinese dissident to leave New York University shortly

    By Jonathan Allen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng, who left his home country last year and became a visiting scholar at New York University, will leave the school this summer but will likely remain in the United States, university officials said on Thursday.

Chen made international headlines last year when he escaped house arrest in China's Shandong province, after campaigning for farmers and disabled citizens and exposing forced abortions in China. Chen spent 20 hours on the run before finding refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, prompting urgent negotiations between the two countries and, finally, China's agreement to let him travel to the United States.

Chen, who was born blind and taught himself law, may head to Fordham University Law School, also in New York City, according to a Fordham spokesman who said negotiations were still underway.

Chen could not immediately be reached for comment, but Danica Mills, an interpreter for Chen, said he may release a statement later.

Since moving with his wife and children to New York, working at NYU's U.S.-Asia Law Institute and working to learn English, Chen has continued to criticize China's human rights record, both through NYU forums and elsewhere.

On Thursday, the New York Post, citing an anonymous professor, reported that NYU had asked Chen to leave the school earlier than agreed at the behest of the Chinese authorities for fear that displeasing them would disrupt the construction of an NYU campus in Shanghai.

NYU confirmed that Chen would leave the school, but a spokesman called the Post's report "fanciful and false."

"If it were true, why would NYU have taken Mr. Chen in at the height of the public fervor, and why would the Chinese authorities have given us permissions to move forward with our Shanghai campus AFTER his arrival here?" spokesman John Beckman said in an email. "The plain fact is that these are unrelated matters. In countless hours of conversations involving the establishment of our Shanghai campus, this matter has never come up."

Jerome Cohen, an NYU law professor and friend of Chen who helped broker his departure from China, stated in May 2012, before Chen left Beijing, that he would be at NYU for a year at most.

Cohen had said, in an interview with PBS, "The idea would be, they could come for up to a year. And, at that point, he will be more comfortable with himself. He will be more adjusted to freedom. And he will have to decide, 'What next?'"

Cohen, who is travelling in China, said in a statement that: "No political refugee, even Albert Einstein, has received better treatment by an American academic institution than that received by Chen from NYU, and I am grateful to the university administration for its extraordinary generosity, which could not reasonably be expected to go on indefinitely."

In an interview with Reuters last month, Chen criticized China in the wake of reports that his relatives there had been harassed and mistreated by local authorities, and urged the United States to intervene, saying China had promised that his family would not be targeted.
