GEORGE TOWN, Feb 11 ? Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak promised today to consider Han Chiang College?s application for university college status in his speech at the Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) Chinese New Year open house this morning.?We are going to consider upgrading Han Chiang to a university college for mass communications,? he said in his speech at the school field where the event was held.
The field was filled to full capacity, with police officials saying that up to 100,000 people had turned up, with most in the audience awaiting a short single-song performance by Korean sensation Psy, known for his ?Oppa Gangnam Style? hit.
He also repeated his commitment to build a monorail system in the state, a traffic dispersal system and to improve the transport system in order to resolve the traffic woes here.
?I assure you, if BN is given a chance to continue leading the country, we will achieve our dreams and aspirations to be a fully developed country by 2020,? he said.
He again reached out to the mostly ethnic Chinese community in Penang by thanking Penangites for letting him celebrate the auspicious first two days of Chinese New Year here.
?I have never done this before and I feel lucky and happy that this year I can be here for these two days to celebrate this special festival with you,? he said.
He thanked Penangites for giving him and his family such a ?rapturous welcome? when they arrived here yesterday.
In a bid to win Chinese support, Najib?s son went up on stage to wish everyone a happy Chinese New Year in mandarin before Najib gave his speech.
?The reason I am here is that I want all of you to feel that we are here for you and we want to make Penang the pearl of Malaysia and the pride for all Malaysians,? Najib said.
He said the BN government is ready to listen to the people and wants to hear what the people want.
?We want to hear what the people of people want by coming to Penang,? he said.
He also repeated his earlier promise, made on December 8, that 20,000 affordable housing units will be built in Penang within the next five years.
Penang is seen as a Pakatan Rakyat stronghold with BN striving to recapture the state ever since it lost the state in Election 2008.
Election 2013, which must be called by June, will see a tough tussle between the Pakatan Rakyat and BN for this island state that consists of a majority of ethnic Chinese, especially on the island side.
PR had won 29 state seats out of 40 in 2008, effectively wiping out BN?s component parties Gerakan, MCA and MIC, leaving Umno with only 11 seats.
BN has so far voiced its confidence in retaining its 11 seats and recapturing seven more seats from PR, with a view of winning back the state if it managed to sway five more seats which it had seen as being shaky.
